AI Platform Engineer — Contract-to-Hire (1099)About the Role
We are looking for an AI Platform Engineer to join a newly focused AI platform team supporting a growing business in the U.S. aviation market.
This is not a traditional product engineering role. The primary mission is to accelerate the broader engineering organization by building AI-powered developer platforms, autonomous workflows, and internal engineering tooling rather than shipping end-user product features.
You will help build and scale internal AI systems designed to automate testing, development workflows, and software development lifecycle (SDLC) processes.
This position is Contract-to-Hire, initially engaged as a 1099 contractor, with the potential to transition to a permanent position based on performance and business needs.
What You'll Do
- Build and maintain AI-native applications, agentic workflows, and autonomous engineering systems.
- Develop AI-powered automation for software development, testing, CI/CD, and SDLC processes.
- Design and implement reliable distributed systems and cloud infrastructure.
- Build and maintain AWS infrastructure using services such as ECS/Fargate, ECR, ALB, and IAM.
- Develop and manage infrastructure using Terraform and Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
- Contribute to internal engineering platforms and developer tooling that improve productivity across the organization.
- Work with large monorepos and modern JavaScript/TypeScript workspace tooling.
- Design and optimize data systems using PostgreSQL and MongoDB.
- Leverage advanced AI development workflows, including terminal-based AI tooling, autonomous agents, and tools such as Claude Code.
- Work closely with engineering teams to identify opportunities for AI-powered automation and continuously iterate on solutions.
- Make independent technical decisions while operating in a highly autonomous and rapidly changing environment.
Mandatory Qualifications
- Strong experience building AI-native applications, not simply using AI coding assistants.
- Hands-on experience building agentic workflows, AI automation, or ML pipelines.
- Deep hands-on AWS infrastructure experience, particularly:
- ECS / Fargate
- ECR
- ALB
- IAM
- Strong Terraform / Infrastructure as Code experience.
- Experience designing and working with distributed systems architectures.
- Experience managing monorepos, including technologies such as Nx, Turborepo, pnpm workspaces, or Yarn workspaces.
- Strong experience with PostgreSQL and MongoDB.
- Comfortable with advanced AI development workflows, including Claude Code, terminal-based AI tooling, autonomous agents, and AI-assisted engineering workflows.
- Aviation industry experience.
- Knowledge of the U.S. flight training ecosystem and FAA regulations.
- Strong understanding of modern software engineering practices and SDLC automation.
