Frontier Direct is a Texas-based direct primary care company delivering integrated care through proprietary technology. The company operates in a value-based care model serving self-insured employers, combining clinical delivery with a vertically integrated platform that handles member engagement, provider workflows, billing reconciliation, and medical review automation — positioning for scale to 120,000+ lives while building measurable ROI systems for sponsor retention and institutional capital readiness.
As a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET), you will drive day-to-day quality strategy and automation execution for Frontier's clinical and operational platform and own the quality assurance interface between engineering and stakeholders — designing comprehensive test plans, building scalable automation frameworks, and ensuring software quality throughout the SDLC. This is a key quality advocate role within an engineering organization operating in a regulated healthcare environment where HIPAA compliance and SOC 2 control requirements are first-class concerns, not afterthoughts.
What You'll Own
- Test Planning: Author detailed test plans and test cases for new features, integrations, and regression cycles — covering functional, edge-case, and security-sensitive scenarios including PHI access controls and audit logging requirements
- Automation Development: Build and maintain automation frameworks for API and end-to-end testing; integrate suites into CI/CD pipelines for continuous quality feedback
- Compliance-Aware Testing: Design test scenarios that account for PHI handling, access controls, and audit logging requirements aligned with HIPAA and SOC 2 Type II controls; support audit evidence collection as needed
- Defect Management: Identify, document, and track defects through resolution; partner with developers to reproduce issues and validate fixes
- Quality Advocacy: Participate in sprint ceremonies, contribute to story refinement with a quality lens, and champion shift-left testing practices across the team
- Tooling and Process: Evaluate and introduce testing tools that improve coverage, speed, and reliability; maintain clear documentation of test strategies and results
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a QA automation or in an SDET role
- Proficiency in Python or a comparable scripting language for test development
- Hands-on experience building and maintaining automated test suites for REST APIs
- CI/CD integration experience (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar)
- Working knowledge of HIPAA requirements as they relate to software testing — PHI data handling, access controls, and audit trails
- Ability to read application code to inform testing approach and identify risk areas
- Experience working in a fast paced, start up environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience testing healthcare data integrations (HL7, FHIR, EDI 837/835)
- Familiarity with SOC 2 Type II control frameworks and evidence collection for audits
- Experience with contract testing tools (e.g., Pact)
- GCP or cloud platform exposure
- Familiarity with AI assisted testing suites
- Security testing fundamentals (OWASP, penetration test support, vulnerability validation)
Benefits
- Frontier Membership for you and your immediate family
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance
- Voluntary insurance: short-term disability, long-term disability, life insurance, and other supplemental insurances.

Tips for Your Remote Software Development Engineer In Test Job Search
Show automation framework depth on your resume
List the specific frameworks you've built or extended, not just used. Hiring managers distinguish candidates who wrote custom Selenium or Playwright utilities from those who ran existing scripts. Name the languages, assertion libraries, and CI integrations you owned.
Quantify test coverage impact in bullets
Replace vague claims with outcomes tied to your automation work. How much did flaky test rates drop? What release cycle time did your suite reduce? Concrete before-and-after numbers make your resume stand out against candidates who list tools without results.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists software development engineer in test openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by test stack, not just title
Job titles vary widely across companies. Search for the tools central to your experience, like Appium, Cypress, or JMeter, alongside the title. Roles labeled QA engineer, SDET, or automation engineer often describe identical work and competition levels differ noticeably.
Prepare to whiteboard a test plan live
Most SDET loops include a design round where you outline a test strategy for a real feature from scratch. Practice talking through boundary conditions, edge cases, data dependencies, and failure modes before you sit down, not just syntax or algorithm questions.
Negotiate scope before accepting an offer
Clarify whether the role owns the test infrastructure or inherits legacy suites, and whether it reports into engineering or QA. Both factors shape growth, influence, and day-to-day frustration more than most candidates realize until they're already in the seat.
