Role: Senior Site Reliability Engineer (Linux)
Location: Remote – USA – PST Hours
Contract Role
FedRAMP experience is required. Since the client handles government information, having FedRAMP or equivalent compliance experience is a significant plus.
Job description: We are looking for a Senior SRE (Linux) to build and operate the systems that run on every host across our infrastructure. Our team owns OS configuration, automation, AMIs, and container base images across a large-scale hybrid environment (AWS + on-prem). If you enjoy working across layers—from automation to low-level debugging—this role sits right at that boundary.
What You Will Do
- Build automation for Linux host lifecycle (config, patching, images)
- Own system services, base images, and infrastructure components
- Debug production issues across OS, performance, and service layers
- Work across codebases (C, Go, Python, Ruby) to diagnose and fix issues
- Lead projects from ambiguous problems to production
- Improve reliability through automation and system design
- Partner on security and FedRAMP requirements
- Participate in a sustainable on-call rotation (~16 days/year)
What Makes This Role Interesting
- Own the Linux layer across the entire platform
- Work across the stack: kernel → containers → automation
- Solve real tradeoffs: reliability, security, and developer experience
- High ownership with direct impact on how engineers run services
What We are Looking For
- 7+ years working with Linux in production
- Strong automation skills (Python and/or Ruby, Ansible preferred)
- Experience debugging complex systems issues
- Comfortable working across cloud + on-prem environments
Nice to Have
- Docker / Kubernetes
- AMIs or container image building
- Go, C, or other systems-level languages
- Experience with compliance environments (FedRAMP, NIST, etc.)

What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in remote sre engineer jobs.
- Proficiency with Kubernetes and container orchestration at production scale
- Experience writing infrastructure-as-code using Terraform or similar tools
- Hands-on knowledge of monitoring and alerting platforms such as Prometheus, Datadog, or Grafana
- Strong programming or scripting skills in Python, Go, or Bash for automation
- Demonstrated experience owning incident response, postmortems, and on-call rotations
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field
Tips for Your Remote Sre Engineer Job Search
Show async incident response in your portfolio
Remote sre employers want evidence you can own an incident without real-time collaboration. Document a postmortem you wrote, a runbook you built, or an alerting system you designed solo. Concrete artifacts like these signal readiness for distributed on-call work.
Apply early to remote roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists remote sre engineer openings from across the U.S. in one place, so you can find roles that match your stack and apply directly without sorting through mixed location listings. Applying early matters because remote roles close faster than on-site postings.
Highlight observability and tooling fluency upfront
Remote sre hiring managers scan for specific tools quickly. Name your experience with Prometheus, Grafana, PagerDuty, or equivalent platforms in your resume summary, not buried in a skills list. Distributed teams rely on these tools daily and want engineers who need no ramp-up.
Prepare for async-first technical interviews
Many remote-first companies use take-home infrastructure design exercises or async written technical screens before live calls. Practice explaining your architecture decisions in writing, not just verbally. Clear, structured written reasoning in these exercises directly signals how you'll communicate on a distributed team.
Remote Sre Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a remote sre engineer job?
Target remote-first engineering organizations and distributed teams in cloud infrastructure, SaaS, and fintech, where remote sre roles concentrate. Remote employers screen heavily for self-direction, async written communication, and ownership of on-call processes without in-person support. Concrete tools like Terraform, Kubernetes, observability platforms, and incident management systems should be visible in your resume and public projects to stand out.
Which companies hire remote sre engineers?
Remote sre engineer roles are posted by Lambda, Qlik, and Block and others right now, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Remote-first tech companies, cloud platform providers, and distributed fintech and enterprise software teams are among the most consistent hirers of remote sre engineers.
Can you get a remote sre engineer job with no experience?
Yes, but remote entry-level sre roles are harder to land because employers expect you to troubleshoot and operate independently from day one without a senior engineer nearby. Smaller remote-first startups and open-source-driven companies are more open to early-career candidates. A home lab, public GitHub projects demonstrating infrastructure automation, or a cloud certification can substitute for formal experience in many cases.
Do you need a degree for remote sre engineer jobs?
Not always. Remote employers hiring sre engineers weigh demonstrated skills in reliability engineering, incident response, and infrastructure as code more heavily than a formal degree. Candidates who can show production experience, contributions to open-source tooling, or certifications in cloud platforms often move forward without a computer science degree, especially at remote-first companies with skills-based hiring processes.
Which industries hire the most remote sre engineers?
Most remote sre engineer openings sit in Technology & Software, Law & Legal Services, and Distribution & Wholesale, per current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. These sectors rely on distributed engineering teams managing large-scale, always-on systems, which makes remote sre work both practical and structurally embedded in how they operate.
