Research And Development Engineer Jobs in Idaho: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a research and development engineer in Idaho?
Most research and development engineer roles in Idaho require at minimum a bachelor's degree in engineering or a closely related science field, with many laboratory and national-lab positions preferring a master's or doctorate. Idaho does not mandate a state license specifically for R&D engineers, though roles involving nuclear systems at Idaho National Laboratory may require DOE security clearance. Professional Engineer licensure through the Idaho Board of Licensure of Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors strengthens candidates for senior positions.
Which companies hire research and development engineers in Idaho?
Companies currently hiring research and development engineers in Idaho include University of Idaho, State of Idaho, and Micron Technology, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Idaho's concentration of semiconductor manufacturing and nuclear energy research means many openings are tied to large anchor employers with multi-year project pipelines.
Which Idaho cities have the most research and development engineer jobs?
Moscow, Boise, and Pocatello post the most research and development engineer openings in Idaho. Boise leads due to its semiconductor and tech manufacturing base anchored by Micron Technology and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, while Idaho Falls draws significant R&D activity from Idaho National Laboratory and its contractor network, and Pocatello supports engineering roles connected to Idaho State University research programs and regional manufacturing.
Are there remote research and development engineer jobs in Idaho?
Yes, but they're rare. Research and development engineering is fundamentally a hands-on role requiring access to lab equipment, prototypes, and physical test environments, which limits full remote work significantly. About 9% of research and development engineer openings tied to Idaho are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions tend to involve data analysis, computational modeling, or technical writing phases of a project rather than active laboratory work.
How can I get hired as a research and development engineer in Idaho with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a co-op or internship with Idaho National Laboratory or Micron Technology, both of which run structured programs for students and recent graduates in engineering and applied science. Entry-level titles like test engineer, process technician, or junior materials analyst often transition directly into R&D roles after one to two years. A strong capstone project, published undergraduate research, or a hands-on thesis from Boise State University or the University of Idaho adds immediate credibility with Idaho hiring managers.
Where can I find and apply to research and development engineer jobs in Idaho?
You can find and apply to research and development engineer jobs in Idaho on Migrate Mate, which lists current Idaho openings across the state's major hiring hubs. Search for roles that fit your specialization and experience level, then apply directly to the ones that match.
