Research Engineer Jobs in Idaho: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a research engineer in Idaho?
Most research engineer positions in Idaho require at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, materials science, or a related discipline, with many employers at Idaho National Laboratory and Micron preferring a master's or doctorate for independent research roles. Idaho does not require a state-issued engineering license for most research-focused positions, though obtaining a Professional Engineer license through the Idaho Board of Licensure of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors strengthens candidacy for senior roles.
Which companies hire research engineers in Idaho?
Idaho research engineer roles are posted by University of Idaho, State of Idaho, and Micron Technology and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Idaho National Laboratory, as one of the nation's largest federally funded research facilities, is consistently among the highest-volume employers in the state for this role.
Which Idaho cities have the most research engineer jobs?
Moscow, Boise, and Pocatello post the most research engineer openings in Idaho. Boise leads because of its concentration of semiconductor manufacturers and tech companies, Idaho Falls draws heavily from Idaho National Laboratory's large research workforce, and Coeur d'Alene benefits from growing advanced manufacturing and materials firms that have expanded into northern Idaho.
Are there remote research engineer jobs in Idaho?
Yes, but they're limited, since research engineering typically requires hands-on laboratory work, equipment operation, or on-site collaboration. About 9% of research engineer openings tied to Idaho are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, which reflects the role's practical nature. The tasks most likely to be performed remotely include data analysis, technical writing, and computational modeling.
How can I get hired as a research engineer in Idaho with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for internship or co-op programs run by Idaho National Laboratory, which recruits undergraduate and graduate students year-round for research assistant and junior engineer roles. Micron Technology also runs structured new-graduate programs in process engineering that feed into research functions. Candidates benefit from building a portfolio of independent projects, published coursework, or thesis research, and from pursuing roles with titles like laboratory technician or process engineer as a lateral entry point.
Where can I find and apply to research engineer jobs in Idaho?
You can find and apply to research engineer jobs in Idaho on Migrate Mate, which lists current Idaho openings updated regularly. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your background and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
