Research Intern Jobs in Kansas City: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a research intern job in Kansas City?
The strongest path in Kansas City runs through its healthcare and life sciences corridor, where institutions along Hospital Hill and the Midtown medical district recruit research interns for clinical, public health, and biomedical projects. University-affiliated labs at UMKC and KU Medical Center are active sources of entry-level research roles. Candidates who demonstrate experience with data collection, lab protocols, or research writing, and who apply directly to hospital systems and research institutes, tend to move fastest in this market.
Which companies hire research interns in Kansas City?
Companies currently hiring research interns in Kansas City include Sporting Kansas City, Children's Mercy Hospitals & Clinics, and Burns & McDonnell, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Kansas City's hiring mix leans toward academic medical centers, regional healthcare networks, and mission-driven nonprofits and think tanks that run ongoing research programs.
Are there remote research intern jobs in Kansas City?
Yes, though it depends on the role: desk-based and analytical research internships can go fully remote, while lab-based, clinical, or fieldwork roles are almost always on-site. About 17% of research intern openings tied to Kansas City are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with the highest remote share in policy research, data analysis, and social science projects. Employers in the Crossroads and downtown office districts tend to offer the most hybrid flexibility.
How can I get a research intern job in Kansas City with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point in Kansas City is a volunteer or work-study research assistant role through UMKC, KU Medical Center, or one of the city's community health organizations, which regularly bring on students and career changers for short-term projects. Nonprofit research shops and regional policy institutes in the downtown and Midtown areas also hire junior researchers for grant-funded work with limited prerequisites. Building a portfolio of even one completed research project, a literature review, or a data summary gives you a concrete edge when applying locally.
Which industries hire the most research interns in Kansas City?
Most research intern openings in Kansas City sit in Technology & Software, Construction & Real Estate, and Government & Public Sector, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Kansas City's strong anchor institutions in healthcare, higher education, and community development create consistent demand for research support across clinical, policy, and applied social science work.
