Roadway Engineer Jobs in Raleigh: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a roadway engineer job in Raleigh?
The strongest entry points in Raleigh are the NCDOT capital region offices, municipal engineering departments serving Wake County and the City of Raleigh, and the engineering consultancies clustered near Research Triangle Park. Firms supporting the region's rapid residential and commercial expansion hire steadily, and candidates with experience in corridor studies, interchange design, or stormwater integration stand out given the volume of mixed-use development projects in play.
Which companies hire roadway engineers in Raleigh?
Employers hiring roadway engineers in Raleigh right now include Whitman, Requardt & Associates, LLP, LJB, and Kiewit, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Raleigh's market blends large engineering consultancies, NCDOT-aligned contractors, and municipal government agencies, reflecting the city's sustained infrastructure investment and population-driven road network expansion.
Are there remote roadway engineer jobs in Raleigh?
Yes, though opportunities are limited since most roadway engineer work involves field assessments, site coordination, and local agency meetings. About 36% of roadway engineer openings tied to Raleigh are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with flexibility most common in roles focused on traffic modeling, CAD design, environmental documentation, and project reporting rather than construction observation or inspection.
How can I get a roadway engineer job in Raleigh with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Raleigh is a junior engineer or engineering technician role with a mid-size DOT consultant or a Wake County municipal department, where EIT-level candidates work on plan preparation and field data collection. NC State's engineering program and NCDOT's internship pipeline funnel early-career candidates directly into local firms. Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D and a completed EIT exam meaningfully improve competitiveness for Raleigh openings.
Which industries hire the most roadway engineers in Raleigh?
Raleigh roadway engineer roles concentrate in Energy and Consulting & Professional Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Raleigh's position as a state capital paired with one of the fastest-growing metro populations in the Southeast drives sustained demand across public agency, private consulting, and land development sectors.
