Senior Level Roadway Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a senior level roadway engineer job?
Employers at this level want candidates who have owned projects from scoping through construction closeout, not just contributed to them. Demonstrate your ability to resolve complex design challenges, lead multidisciplinary coordination, and mentor junior engineers. A strong portfolio of delivered infrastructure projects, familiarity with current design standards like AASHTO, and experience managing client relationships will set you apart from candidates who only have task-level experience.
Which companies hire senior level roadway engineers?
Companies hiring senior level roadway engineers right now include Lochmueller, GFT, and VHB, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Hiring at this level comes from a mix of large civil and transportation engineering consultancies, state departments of transportation, and infrastructure-focused government contractors who need experienced engineers to lead project teams and oversee technical quality.
Are there remote senior level roadway engineer jobs?
Yes, though most roles still require some site presence or client-facing work. About 32% of senior level roadway engineer openings are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with the majority being hybrid arrangements that combine office-based design work with periodic field visits. Fully remote positions tend to be concentrated in planning, design review, and program management functions rather than construction-phase roles.
What makes a roadway engineer role senior level?
Senior level roadway engineer roles are defined by ownership, not just execution. At this stage, you are expected to lead project delivery, make independent technical decisions on alignment, grading, drainage, and pavement design, and serve as the accountable engineer on complex assignments. Mentoring junior and mid-level staff, coordinating across disciplines, and managing client or agency relationships are also core expectations, not optional duties.
Which industries hire the most senior level roadway engineers?
Senior level roadway engineer roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Energy, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. These sectors drive demand because they manage large capital programs, federal and state transportation funding, and long-horizon infrastructure projects that require experienced engineers who can carry technical responsibility from design through construction.
