The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Radiology is seeking a Senior Engineer Associate to manage the day-to-day operations of the Specialty Modalities Team. This position will be critical in developing and managing the development and implementation of practical, creative, functional, safe, and affordable solutions to technical problems using scientific knowledge, ingenuity, mathematics, and engineering principles.
Position Responsibilities
Leadership/Human Resources
- Collaborates with the Engineering Director and Departmental HR Representatives within the Specialty Modalities Team to ensure a consistent approach to HR Management and employee engagement
- Holds Engineering Specialists, Coordinators, and other personnel accountable for high performance and workforce engagement by articulating expectations, monitoring performance and providing feedback consistently across areas of responsibility
- Approves resource allocations and staffing models. Oversees Specialty Modalities Team labor and operational budgets
- Oversees building and updating workforce models aligned with demand and efficiency
- Works with Engineering Director and other departmental leadership to establish policies and programs
- Responsible for the recruitment of new employees to the Specialty Modalities Team, address performance problems, and provide recommendations regarding disciplinary actions and discharge of personnel, as necessary
- Evaluates staff competencies and training to ensure a well-rounded support team and adequate succession planning
- Ensures that radiology engineering staff is provided with educational training to complete their assigned tasks
Communication
- Engages and collaborates with Engineering Director, DAO, physicians, and clinical areas to identify opportunities for improvement, program development and capital budgeting
- Collaborates with leaders outside of Radiology with whom the Specialty Modalities Team supports to ensure capital budgeting and equipment support
- Communicates with external agencies/vendors and act as department liaison for equipment and service needs related to radiology engineering
- Manages the relationship between engineering specialists, staff, medical staff, and UI Health Care leadership in a positive manner
- Represents radiology engineering in meetings or on committees within UI Health Care and College of Medicine
- Communicates expectations and provide support and resources that are in alignment with the vision and strategic planning of the UI Health Care to foster innovation and efficiency in the workplace
Financial Responsibility
- Prepares capital equipment replacement plans for the DAO and DEO as directed or as necessary
- Advises Engineering Director on equipment replacement plans for the Specialty Modalities Team
- Collaborates with departments outside Radiology on capital equipment selection and budgeting
- Evaluates radiologic imaging technical specifications
- Prepares technical analysis reports for potential capital purchases
- Analyzes vendor equipment bid proposals
- Coordinates vendor equipment presentations for faculty and staff
- Coordinates development of equipment purchasing RFP technical specifications
- Prepares radiological engineering budgets to include routine maintenance, preventative maintenance, service contracts, quality control and assurance and parts and supplies for the Specialty Modalities Team
- Provides staff with direction to ensure Specialty Modalities Team systems are maintained to ensure correct operations and compliant with applicable codes and regulations and laws
- Directs and ensures utilization of extra divisional resources to complete instrumentation maintenance functions
- Directs development and coordination of all Specialty Modalities equipment quality control and assurance activities based upon technical and patient-care parameters input from radiology staff members
- Directs the administrative functions of the Specialty Modalities Team
- Ensures Radiology Engineering staff is provided with educational training to complete their assigned tasks
- Develops divisional staff organizational structure, scheduling, and task assignments to ensure successful completion of assigned tasks and utilization of staff resources
- Assists the Engineering Director in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for the Radiological Engineering Division
- Recommends to the Engineering Director on the adoption and/or modification of Departmental Policies and Procedures
Supervision Received
- General supervision is received from Radiology Engineering Director
Supervision Exercised
- Provides administrative supervision over Engineer Specialist (PWB3), Engineering Coordinators (PWB2), and Radiology Engineering support staff

Education Requirements
- Completion of a Masters degree in Physics, Engineering, Electronics, IT or other STEM field or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Qualifications
- At least three (3) years of relevant work experience
- Relevant leadership and/or management experience
- Experience in financial management, data analysis, and budgeting
- Knowledge and experience with organizational management software tools (i.e. Visio, WebTMA, Microsoft Office, CAD, etc.)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence
- Demonstrated ability fostering or promoting a welcoming and respectful work environment
- Driver's license and ability to meet the University of Iowa Fleet Management Driver’s safety requirements
Desired Qualifications
- LEAN and/or Six Sigma experience or Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification
- Experience with continual process and quality improvement
- Knowledge of digital and analog electronics, high voltage distribution systems and electro-mechanical devices
- Experience working in a healthcare environment
- Knowledge and experience maintaining diagnostic imaging systems, radiation detection and radioisotope principles
- Knowledge of radiology imaging systems such as PACS
- Experience in the assembly, installation, troubleshooting and repair of mechanical/electrical components and equipment
- Working knowledge of internet security and data privacy principles
- Demonstrated excellent problem-solving ability to resolve issues and insure functionality
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively independently or within a team environment
- Knowledge of University of Iowa Policies and Procedures
