Senior Staff Data Engineer Jobs in Hawaii: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a senior staff data engineer in Hawaii?
There is no state-issued license specific to data engineering in Hawaii, so the path runs through education, experience, and credentials recognized by Hawaii employers. Most hiring managers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical field, followed by progressive engineering experience. Cloud certifications from AWS, Google Cloud, or Microsoft Azure carry significant weight with Hawaii's defense and healthcare employers. Candidates pursuing roles with federal contractors often need to qualify for a security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship and a background check.
How much do senior staff data engineers make in Hawaii?
Senior staff data engineers in Hawaii earn a median of about $124,040 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $64,690 for the lowest 10% to over $238,930 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire senior staff data engineers in Hawaii?
Hawaii senior staff data engineer roles are posted by Kaiser Permanente, CVS Health, and Alpha and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Defense contractors and healthcare systems are particularly consistent hirers across the islands, given Hawaii's role as a major Pacific military hub and the ongoing digitization of its hospital networks.
Which Hawaii cities have the most senior staff data engineer jobs?
Honolulu, Wailuku, and Lihue are the cities with the most senior staff data engineer openings in Hawaii. Honolulu dominates because it anchors the state's defense contracting community, its largest hospital systems, and state government technology offices, while openings in Maui and Hilo are typically tied to regional healthcare providers and state agency satellite operations.
Are there remote senior staff data engineer jobs in Hawaii?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 0% of senior staff data engineer openings tied to Hawaii are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how much of the work centers on cloud infrastructure and pipeline development that does not require a fixed physical location. The portions most commonly performed remotely are data modeling, pipeline development, and architecture review, while roles tied to classified government systems typically require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a senior staff data engineer in Hawaii with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into data engineering from a closely adjacent role such as data analyst, database administrator, or software developer, which are all common stepping-stone positions at Hawaii's larger technology employers. Hawaii Pacific Health and the University of Hawaii system both run technology internship and associate programs that give candidates without senior experience a foothold. Building a portfolio of pipeline and cloud architecture projects, earning an entry-level cloud certification, and targeting junior data engineer postings at state government agencies or defense contractors are the concrete steps that open the door.
Where can I find and apply to senior staff data engineer jobs in Hawaii?
You can find and apply to senior staff data engineer jobs in Hawaii on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your background and the type of work you want to do, and apply directly to each position that fits.
