Who we are
Aurora's mission is to deliver the benefits of self-driving technology safely, quickly, and broadly.
The Aurora Driver will create a new era in mobility and logistics, one that will bring a safer, more efficient, and more accessible future to everyone.
At Aurora, you will tackle massively complex problems alongside other passionate, intelligent individuals, growing as an expert while expanding your knowledge. For the latest news from Aurora, visit aurora.tech or follow us on LinkedIn.
Aurora hires talented people with diverse backgrounds who are ready to help build a transportation ecosystem that will make our roads safer, get crucial goods where they need to go, and make mobility more efficient and accessible for all. We are looking for a Senior Staff Product Designer to join as the design lead for our Customer Experience team, reporting directly to the Head of Design. This is a player/coach role. You will carry significant IC responsibility while directly managing one Product Designer who is focused on load planning and exception management.
Your mandate is the end-to-end customer journey that makes autonomous freight a reality. You will design the suite of tools used by trucking and logistics companies to activate and manage daily operations for a fleet of self-driving trucks. While autonomous technology is genuinely new territory for our customers, your job is to design experiences that feel familiar, intuitive, and integrated into their existing ecosystems. This isn't a SaaS dashboard exercise. These are high-stakes operational tools that a vehicle operator or load planner needs to adopt to safely run an autonomous truck.
In this role, you will
- Own the customer experience blueprint. Define how interactions with the Aurora Driver are consistent, simple, and unified with the broader operational ecosystem
- Design customer-facing digital tools across web, mobile, and partner integrations
- Do just enough research to generate actionable insight, then use it to drive product decisions, not decorate them
- Tie your work directly to outcomes. For example, ensure support feels like a natural part of the product by designing self-serve recovery paths that allow users to resolve issues in under 5 minutes
- Manage and develop one Product Designer, and contribute to raising the bar for the broader design practice
Required Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience in product design, with a track record of leading complex, multi-workstream projects
- Experience formally managing other designers
- A portfolio showing end-to-end work across research and design for complex enterprise, operational, or mission-critical systems, with clear evidence of business impact
- Expertise in interaction design, information architecture, and UX research with a high bar for visual design quality
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate research insights and design rationale into clear, compelling narratives for executive, cross-functional, and technical audiences
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience with autonomous technology, hardware-software integrated products, or physical supply chain logistics
- Demonstrated ability to use AI across the design lifecycle without losing judgment
The base salary range for this position is $189K-$274K per year. Aurora's pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, the successful candidate's starting base pay will be determined based on factors including job-related skills, experience, qualifications, relevant education or training, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future. The successful candidate will also be eligible for an annual bonus, equity compensation, and benefits.

Senior Staff Product Designer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a senior staff product designer in California?
There is no state-issued license or California-specific credential required to work as a senior staff product designer. The standard path is a bachelor's or master's degree in interaction design, human-computer interaction, or a closely related field, followed by progressive years of product design experience building toward staff-level scope. California employers at this level weight portfolio evidence of systems thinking, cross-functional leadership, and measurable product impact heavily over academic credentials alone.
How much do senior staff product designers make in California?
Senior staff product designers in California earn a median of about $100,770 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $62,860 for the lowest 10% to over $168,490 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire senior staff product designers in California?
Employers hiring senior staff product designers in California right now include Adobe, Aurora Innovation, and Palo Alto Networks, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's dense concentration of consumer tech and enterprise software headquarters means design organizations here tend to be large, with dedicated staff-plus IC ladders that create ongoing demand at this seniority level.
Which California cities have the most senior staff product designer jobs?
San Francisco, San Jose, and Palo Alto have the most senior staff product designer openings in California. The San Francisco Bay Area dominates because it is home to the headquarters of the largest consumer and enterprise technology companies in the world, while Los Angeles has grown into a significant second market driven by media tech, entertainment platforms, and a maturing startup ecosystem that now recruits at staff level.
Are there remote senior staff product designer jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 57% of senior staff product designer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how effectively senior design work is done asynchronously. The parts of the role most likely to stay remote are design systems work, strategic reviews, and cross-functional alignment, while user research sessions and design critiques with large teams tend to draw companies back toward hybrid arrangements.
How can I get hired as a senior staff product designer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an associate or mid-level product designer role, then building toward staff scope over time. California-based technology companies including large consumer platforms and enterprise software firms run structured new-grad hiring programs that recruit directly from IDEO-affiliated programs, UC and Cal State HCI and design graduate programs, and bootcamp pipelines. Adjacent roles in UX research, content design, or product management can also open the door, especially when paired with a portfolio that demonstrates systems-level thinking and shipped product work.
Where can I find and apply to senior staff product designer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to senior staff product designer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated in real time. Find a role that fits and apply directly from the listing.
