DESCRIPTION
You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Are you passionate about building innovative service architectures that solve real world problems in the context of one of the largest networks on Earth? Do you want to be part of a group that is reducing the complexity of operating the global AWS network backbone for our customers? The AWS network is one of the largest networks in the world, and its performance and availability are key differentiators in delivering the best cloud computing platform available.
The AWS Network Backbone Organization owns containerized solutions that protect the AWS network against impact every single day. The team is looking for a Software Development Engineer (SDE) to help expand solutions that support the backbone of the entire AWS global network.
In this role, you will work in a hybrid team of software, systems development, and network engineers to understand requirements and extend platforms that support software-defined networks (SDN). You are joining a high performing team interacting closely with other engineering teams across USA, Ireland and Australia. This position is located in Sydney, AUS and working in the heart of AWS global network.

Our goal is to become The Infrastructure Platform for the world – achieving this goal requires automated and massively scalable software services. Success depends on our world-class network infrastructure, and our network depends on our automation.
This position involves on-call responsibilities, typically for one week every two months. We don’t like getting paged in the middle of the night or on the weekend, so we work to ensure that our systems are fault tolerant. When we do get paged, we work together to resolve the root cause so that we don’t get paged for the same issue twice.
Our team is dedicated to supporting new team members. Our team has a broad mix of experience levels and Amazon tenures, and we’re building an environment that celebrates knowledge sharing and mentorship. Our senior engineers truly enjoy mentoring more junior engineers and engineers from non-traditional backgrounds through one-on-one mentoring and thorough, but kind, code reviews. We care about your career growth. We try to assign projects and tasks based on what will help each team member develop into a better-rounded engineer and enable them to take on more complex tasks in the future.
Key job responsibilities
You will be responsible for the design, implementation and quality of services you deliver. Your experience working in software development or in an enterprise environment will help us implement automated solutions across a variety of applications and systems.

- Write high quality distributed system software.
- Work in an agile, startup-like development environment, where you are always working on the most important stuff.
- Work closely with our Network/Systems/Software Engineering teams to ensure fast and smooth roll-out of new designs and products, as well as assist with deployment and sustaining of networking software tools.
- Use data to measure success and take responsibility for the quality of your service and, regardless of their source, strive to prevent faults from impacting your customers.
- Use your strong problem-solving skills, ability to understand and scope solutions, work across teams to drive solutions.
- Contribute to documentation of process and procedures.
- Learn from others and help grow those in your team to achieve their best.
- Take ownership, consider tradeoffs and lean on your expertise to ensure the job gets done.
