Software Engineer Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a software engineer job in Chicago?
Focus your search on Chicago's three strongest hiring pockets: the Loop for financial services and enterprise software firms, Fulton Market for high-growth tech startups, and the Illinois Medical District for health tech. Employers here respond well to candidates with experience in Java, Python, or cloud platforms. Tailoring your application to a specific sector, whether fintech, logistics tech, or SaaS, gives you a concrete edge over generalist applicants.
Which companies hire software engineers in Chicago?
Chicago software engineer roles are posted by JPMorganChase, Caterpillar, and Grainger and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Chicago's mix of legacy financial institutions, mid-market SaaS companies, and fast-growing startups means demand comes from a wide range of employer sizes and sectors.
Are there remote software engineer jobs in Chicago?
Yes, software engineering is one of the more remote-friendly disciplines by nature, since most of the work happens on a screen. About 85% of software engineer openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with fully remote roles most common in backend, cloud, and platform engineering rather than roles requiring on-site collaboration.
How can I get a software engineer job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Chicago is through the city's active bootcamp and apprenticeship ecosystem, with programs like those at the Illinois Institute of Technology and several Fulton Market employers that run structured associate engineer pipelines. Targeting junior roles at mid-size Chicago SaaS companies or fintech startups, which typically have less competition than enterprise firms, and contributing to open-source projects gives you concrete work to show in interviews.
Which industries hire the most software engineers in Chicago?
Most software engineer openings in Chicago sit in Technology & Software, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Chicago's deep roots in commodities trading, insurance, and healthcare have made those sectors consistent drivers of local engineering demand even as newer tech startups have grown in the city.
