Software Engineer Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software engineer in Illinois?
Software engineering in Illinois does not require a state-issued license, so the path runs through education and demonstrated technical skill. Most Illinois employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field, though strong portfolios and bootcamp credentials are accepted at many Chicago-area technology and fintech companies. Gaining experience through internships with Illinois-based employers or contributing to open-source projects strengthens a candidacy considerably.
How much do software engineers make in Illinois?
Software engineers in Illinois earn a median of about $132,110 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $80,980 for the lowest 10% to over $194,740 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software engineers in Illinois?
Employers hiring software engineers in Illinois right now include Speechify, CVS Health, and Caterpillar, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Illinois's large financial services sector, anchored in Chicago, means that banks, insurance companies, and trading firms are among the most consistent sources of software engineering openings in the state.
Which Illinois cities have the most software engineer jobs?
Chicago, Peoria, and Oak Brook have the most software engineer openings in Illinois. Chicago dominates because it is home to the state's largest concentration of financial technology firms, enterprise software companies, and corporate technology headquarters, while suburban cities like Naperville and Schaumburg attract openings from large employers and consulting firms that maintain major operations outside the city core.
Are there remote software engineer jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 75% of software engineer openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how thoroughly desk-based and tool-driven the work is. Backend development, data engineering, and cloud infrastructure roles tend to have the highest share of fully remote arrangements among Illinois software engineering positions.
How can I get hired as a software engineer in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior or associate software engineer role at a mid-size Illinois technology company or a large employer running a formal new-graduate program. Companies such as Morningstar, Allstate, and United Airlines operate structured early-career technology programs that hire candidates with academic projects and internship experience rather than years of professional history. A strong GitHub portfolio, completion of a recognized bootcamp, or an associate credential in software development gives candidates a meaningful edge when applying through those programs.
Where can I find and apply to software engineer jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to software engineer jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current Illinois openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Find the roles that fit your background and experience level and apply directly to the ones that match.
