Software Engineer Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software engineer in Massachusetts?
Software engineering in Massachusetts does not require a state-issued license, so the path runs through education and demonstrated skills. Most employers expect at least a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, though graduates from coding bootcamps with strong portfolios are increasingly competitive. Building projects on GitHub, contributing to open-source work, and completing internships with Massachusetts-based tech or biotech firms are the most effective ways to establish credibility with local hiring teams.
How much do software engineers make in Massachusetts?
Software engineers in Massachusetts earn a median of about $165,210 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $102,810 for the lowest 10% to over $213,970 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software engineers in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring software engineers in Massachusetts right now include Amazon, Anduril, and Raytheon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Massachusetts's concentration of biotech firms, defense contractors, and financial services companies means engineering roles here often sit at the intersection of software and regulated or mission-critical industries.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most software engineer jobs?
Boston, Cambridge, and Lexington have the most software engineer openings in Massachusetts. Boston and Cambridge drive the majority of postings because of the dense cluster of universities, teaching hospitals, biotech companies, and financial technology firms headquartered there, while suburban markets along Route 128 contribute a significant share through established defense and enterprise software campuses that have anchored engineering talent in the region for decades.
Are there remote software engineer jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 73% of software engineer openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how well-suited the role is to distributed work. Back-end development, cloud architecture, and data engineering positions tend to offer the most fully remote flexibility, while roles involving on-site collaboration with hardware teams or regulated lab environments are more likely to require an in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a software engineer in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing an associate or junior software engineer role through a new-grad program at a large Massachusetts employer. Fidelity Investments, Liberty Mutual, and Massachusetts-based biotech firms regularly run structured rotational or early-career programs aimed at candidates without professional experience. Building a portfolio of deployed projects, contributing to open-source repositories, and completing internships at Massachusetts startups or university-affiliated research labs all strengthen an application when a degree alone is not enough.
Where can I find and apply to software engineer jobs in Massachusetts?
You can find and apply to software engineer jobs in Massachusetts on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring in the state right now. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and the type of work you want to do, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
