Software Engineer Jobs in Washington: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software engineer in Washington?
Software engineering in Washington does not require a state-issued license or registration. Most employers hire candidates who hold a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related discipline, though strong candidates with associate degrees or coding bootcamp credentials do get hired, particularly into junior roles at companies concentrated in the Seattle and Eastside corridors. Building a portfolio of deployed projects and contributing to open-source work are the two steps that most consistently move candidates from application to interview in Washington's market.
How much do software engineers make in Washington?
Software engineers in Washington earn a median of about $166,540 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $96,810 for the lowest 10% to over $255,350 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software engineers in Washington?
Employers hiring software engineers in Washington right now include Amazon, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Washington's technology-heavy economy means large employers here tend to hire across multiple engineering disciplines simultaneously, so openings in the state often come with genuine breadth in team and product focus.
Which Washington cities have the most software engineer jobs?
Seattle, Redmond, and Bellevue have the most software engineer openings in Washington. Seattle dominates due to its concentration of technology headquarters and cloud computing operations, while Redmond and Bellevue reflect the large campuses of employers based on the Eastside, making the greater King County corridor the undisputed center of software engineering hiring in the state.
Are there remote software engineer jobs in Washington?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 55% of software engineer openings tied to Washington are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how naturally the work translates to distributed environments. Roles in back-end development, cloud infrastructure, and data engineering tend to carry the highest share of remote or hybrid flexibility within the broader software engineering category.
How can I get hired as a software engineer in Washington with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is targeting associate software engineer or software development engineer I roles, which large Washington employers including Microsoft, Amazon, and Boeing post for new graduates and career changers. Microsoft's LEAP apprenticeship program and Amazon's university hiring pipelines are two well-known on-ramps for candidates without professional experience. A portfolio of two or three deployed personal or open-source projects that demonstrate practical coding ability gives applicants without a degree or work history a concrete competitive edge in Washington interviews.
