Most employers in New York hire candidates with a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, though strong portfolios and bootcamp credentials are accepted at many companies. Building projects, contributing to open-source work, and earning cloud certifications strengthen any application in the New York market.
How much do software engineers make in New York?
Software engineers in New York earn a median of about $166,180 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $97,430 for the lowest 10% to over $224,590 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.

Which New York cities have the most software engineer jobs?
New York, Rochester, and Albany are the New York cities with the most software engineer openings, driven primarily by the concentration of financial services, media, and enterprise tech headquarters in New York City, while Albany's state government and healthcare institutions and Rochester's optics, imaging, and advanced manufacturing sector sustain consistent demand outside the main metro.
