About Watershed
Watershed is the enterprise sustainability platform. Companies like Airbnb, Carlyle Group, FedEx, Visa, and Dr. Martens use Watershed to manage climate and ESG data, produce audit-ready metrics for voluntary and regulatory reporting including CSRD, and drive real decarbonization. We are looking for team members who love product-building, want to work hard at a mission-oriented startup, and will collaborate with us in shaping the culture of a growing team.
We have offices in San Francisco, New York, Denver, London, Paris, Berlin, Sydney, Mexico City, and remote team members across the US and Europe. We hope that you'll be interested in joining us!
The role
Watershed is a software platform for running a world-class climate program. We measure our success in the carbon reduction achievements of our customers. We are looking for team members to join our team focused on delivering outcomes for our Financial Institution customers.
You’ll work on the team turning Watershed’s data layer into an intelligence platform: BI-grade querying, AI-powered discovery and analysis, and the schema architecture underneath it all. The goal is for customers to get answers inside Watershed—not export to Excel.
What you could work on:
Build new interactive data visualizations to help climate leads understand their company's emissions.
Build APIs to unify carbon data access for customers and other engineers.
Build tools that help financial institutions measure and report emissions across their portfolio companies.
Build tools for customers to effectively ingest and interpret business data.
You will:
Ship code to production on day one
Collaborate with product, design, climate science, and data science to build and iterate on software that helps our customers understand their climate data
You might be a fit if you:
Have 6+ years of software engineering industry experience, preferably in Node.js web development or data pipelines
Have experience building scalable software starting from user needs
Are excited to join a startup and are ready to help evolve a growing engineering team
This role will be based in our New York City office.
Must be willing to work from an office 4 days per week (except for remote roles)
Watershed has hub offices in San Francisco, New York, London, and Mexico City and satellite offices in Denver, Sydney, Paris, and Berlin. Where we have offices, employees are expected to be in office for 4 days per week. Certain jobs are open to being remote and will be specifically noted on the jobs page and in the job description if so.
What’s the interview process like?
It starts the same for every candidate: getting to know the team members through 1 to 2 conversations about Watershed, your experience, and your interests. Next steps can vary by role, but usual next steps are a skill or experience interview (e.g. a coding interview for an engineer, a portfolio review for a designer, deeper experience call for other roles) which leads to a virtual or in person interview panel. We prioritize transparency and lack of surprise throughout the process.
What if I need accommodations for my interview?
At Watershed, we are dedicated to ensuring an inclusive recruitment process. We provide reasonable accommodations for candidates with disabilities, long-term conditions, mental health needs, religious observances, neurodivergence, or pregnancy-related support requirements. If you need assistance during your process, please contact your recruiter.

Software Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software engineer in New York?
New York does not require a state-issued license to work as a software engineer, so the path runs through education and demonstrated technical skill. Most employers in New York hire candidates with a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, though strong portfolios and bootcamp credentials are accepted at many companies. Building projects, contributing to open-source work, and earning cloud certifications strengthen any application in the New York market.
How much do software engineers make in New York?
Software engineers in New York earn a median of about $166,180 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $97,430 for the lowest 10% to over $224,590 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software engineers in New York?
Employers hiring software engineers in New York right now include JPMorganChase, Google, and Amazon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New York's concentration of financial institutions, media companies, and enterprise technology firms means software engineering roles appear across a wide range of industries beyond pure tech.
Which New York cities have the most software engineer jobs?
New York, Buffalo, and Syracuse are the New York cities with the most software engineer openings, driven primarily by the concentration of financial services, media, and enterprise tech headquarters in New York City, while Albany's state government and healthcare institutions and Rochester's optics, imaging, and advanced manufacturing sector sustain consistent demand outside the main metro.
Are there remote software engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 68% of software engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how naturally desk-based and tool-driven this work is. Backend development, cloud engineering, and data-focused roles tend to be the most consistently remote, while roles involving on-site infrastructure, trading floors, or embedded systems typically require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a software engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an associate or junior software engineer role at a mid-size New York company or a structured new-graduate program at a larger employer. JPMorgan Chase, Bloomberg, and IBM all run formal early-career engineering programs in New York that accept recent graduates. Candidates who come from adjacent roles like QA analyst or technical support, or who hold a cloud certification and a portfolio of personal or open-source projects, consistently have an edge in New York entry-level hiring.
