About Watershed
Watershed is the enterprise sustainability platform. Companies like Airbnb, Carlyle Group, FedEx, Visa, and Dr. Martens use Watershed to manage climate and ESG data, produce audit-ready metrics for voluntary and regulatory reporting including CSRD, and drive real decarbonization. We are looking for team members who love product-building, want to work hard at a mission-oriented startup, and will collaborate with us in shaping the culture of a growing team.
We have offices in San Francisco, New York, Denver, London, Paris, Berlin, Sydney, Mexico City, and remote team members across the US and Europe. We hope that you'll be interested in joining us!
The role
Watershed is a software platform for running a world-class climate program. We measure our success in the carbon reduction achievements of our customers. We are looking for team members to join our team focused on delivering outcomes for our Financial Institution customers.
You’ll work on the team turning Watershed’s data layer into an intelligence platform: BI-grade querying, AI-powered discovery and analysis, and the schema architecture underneath it all. The goal is for customers to get answers inside Watershed—not export to Excel.
What you could work on:
Build new interactive data visualizations to help climate leads understand their company's emissions.
Build APIs to unify carbon data access for customers and other engineers.
Build tools that help financial institutions measure and report emissions across their portfolio companies.
Build tools for customers to effectively ingest and interpret business data.
You will:
Ship code to production on day one
Collaborate with product, design, climate science, and data science to build and iterate on software that helps our customers understand their climate data
You might be a fit if you:
Have 6+ years of software engineering industry experience, preferably in Node.js web development or data pipelines
Have experience building scalable software starting from user needs
Are excited to join a startup and are ready to help evolve a growing engineering team
This role will be based in our New York City office.
Must be willing to work from an office 4 days per week (except for remote roles)
Watershed has hub offices in San Francisco, New York, London, and Mexico City and satellite offices in Denver, Sydney, Paris, and Berlin. Where we have offices, employees are expected to be in office for 4 days per week. Certain jobs are open to being remote and will be specifically noted on the jobs page and in the job description if so.
What’s the interview process like?
It starts the same for every candidate: getting to know the team members through 1 to 2 conversations about Watershed, your experience, and your interests. Next steps can vary by role, but usual next steps are a skill or experience interview (e.g. a coding interview for an engineer, a portfolio review for a designer, deeper experience call for other roles) which leads to a virtual or in person interview panel. We prioritize transparency and lack of surprise throughout the process.
What if I need accommodations for my interview?
At Watershed, we are dedicated to ensuring an inclusive recruitment process. We provide reasonable accommodations for candidates with disabilities, long-term conditions, mental health needs, religious observances, neurodivergence, or pregnancy-related support requirements. If you need assistance during your process, please contact your recruiter.

Software Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a software engineer job in New York?
Focus on the sectors hiring most actively in New York: fintech firms in Midtown, media and adtech companies in the Flatiron District, and enterprise software shops in Hudson Yards. Candidates with experience in distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, or data pipelines tend to stand out. Attending local tech meetups and targeting companies with established engineering teams gives you a practical edge over remote-only applicants.
Which companies hire software engineers in New York?
New York software engineer roles are posted by JPMorganChase, Google, and Amazon and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New York's hiring mix is broad, with large financial institutions, fast-scaling fintech startups, and global media companies all maintaining substantial engineering teams in the city.
Are there remote software engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, software engineering is one of the more remote-friendly disciplines, especially for backend, data, and platform roles. About 69% of software engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how widely distributed teams have become across the city's tech sector. Front-end and full-stack roles at product companies tend to offer the most remote flexibility.
How can I get a software engineer job in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in New York is targeting associate or junior engineer roles at mid-size fintech startups and adtech companies, which hire more entry-level talent than the large banks. Bootcamp graduates with strong project portfolios find traction at companies in the Flatiron and SoHo tech scenes. Contributing to open-source projects and networking through local groups like New York Tech Alliance improves visibility with hiring managers who recruit directly.
Which industries hire the most software engineers in New York?
New York software engineer roles concentrate in Technology & Software, Healthcare & Medical Services, and Investment & Asset Management, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New York's position as a global financial capital and media hub means those two sectors alone generate a disproportionate share of the city's engineering demand, pulling in talent for trading systems, content platforms, and consumer applications alike.
