Staff Software Developer Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a staff software developer in Illinois?
Staff software development in Illinois has no state-issued license or registration requirement, so the path runs through education and experience. Most Illinois employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related discipline, followed by several years of progressively senior engineering work. Chicago's dense concentration of fintech, healthtech, and enterprise software firms means candidates who build experience in those verticals and earn cloud certifications from AWS, Google, or Microsoft gain a meaningful edge in local hiring.
How much do staff software developers make in Illinois?
Staff software developers in Illinois earn a median of about $132,110 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $80,980 for the lowest 10% to over $194,740 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire staff software developers in Illinois?
Employers hiring staff software developers in Illinois right now include CVS Health, Ritchie Bros., and Ripple, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Illinois's mix of headquartered enterprises and regional engineering hubs means openings appear across industries including financial services, logistics technology, and healthcare software.
Which Illinois cities have the most staff software developer jobs?
Chicago, Westchester, and Illinois are the Illinois cities with the most staff software developer openings. Chicago drives the majority of demand given its concentration of fintech firms, enterprise technology companies, and healthcare systems, while Naperville and Schaumburg contribute through the large corporate campuses and regional headquarters that anchor the western suburban corridor.
Are there remote staff software developer jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 67% of staff software developer openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how naturally this role lends itself to distributed work. Platform engineering, backend systems, and architecture roles tend to see the highest share of fully remote arrangements, while roles requiring close coordination with embedded hardware or on-site infrastructure teams lean hybrid.
How can I get hired as a staff software developer in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing a junior or associate software engineer role at a large Illinois employer and building toward staff-level scope from within. Chicago companies including Morningstar, Zebra Technologies, and major Illinois health systems run new-grad and apprenticeship programs that accept candidates without commercial experience. Moving laterally from QA engineering, data engineering, or DevOps into a development track is another route that Illinois employers recognize. Building a public portfolio on GitHub and earning a cloud certification strengthens any application considerably.
