Frontend Engineer Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a frontend engineer in Illinois?
Frontend engineering has no state-issued license in Illinois, so the path runs through education and demonstrated skill. Most Illinois employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, though coding bootcamp graduates and self-taught developers are regularly hired when they can show strong portfolio work. Building projects in React and TypeScript, contributing to open-source work, and earning vendor-neutral certifications can all strengthen a candidacy in the Illinois market.
How much do frontend engineers make in Illinois?
Frontend engineers in Illinois earn a median of about $132,110 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $80,980 for the lowest 10% to over $194,740 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire frontend engineers in Illinois?
Employers hiring frontend engineers in Illinois right now include Jewel Osco, Burlington Stores, and Walmart, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Illinois's concentration of financial services firms, large insurance companies, and enterprise technology headquarters means frontend engineers here frequently work on complex, data-heavy applications rather than purely consumer-facing products.
Which Illinois cities have the most frontend engineer jobs?
Chicago, Saint Charles, and Oak Brook have the most frontend engineer openings in Illinois. Chicago dominates because it is home to the headquarters and major offices of financial services firms, healthcare technology companies, and digital agencies that maintain large engineering teams, while Naperville and Schaumburg attract postings from corporate campuses and regional technology centers along the I-88 corridor.
Are there remote frontend engineer jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 70% of frontend engineer openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how well the role translates to distributed work. The most remote-friendly subsets of the work are UI development, component library maintenance, and frontend architecture roles where collaboration happens asynchronously through code review and design systems rather than in-person sessions.
How can I get hired as a frontend engineer in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior or associate frontend engineer role, which large Illinois employers in financial technology and healthcare IT hire for specifically as on-ramps. Companies like Allstate and large Chicago-area consulting firms run new-grad and rotational engineering programs that place early-career developers into frontend teams. Building a portfolio of React-based projects, completing a recognized coding bootcamp, and targeting contract-to-hire roles at Illinois digital agencies are concrete ways to get a first credit in the field without prior employer experience.
Where can I find and apply to frontend engineer jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to frontend engineer jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current Illinois openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level and specialty, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
