Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization in AI Architect
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code appears on the USCIS STEM OPT designated degree list. Computer science, computer engineering, and information systems codes typically qualify, but interdisciplinary degrees sometimes require a closer look with your DSO.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask the recruiter for their E-Verify company ID or look up the employer in the E-Verify database before signing an offer. A company that isn't enrolled can't legally employ you on a STEM OPT extension, no matter how enthusiastic they are.
Build an I-983 training plan that maps to the role
AI Architect roles should document specific learning objectives tied to systems design, model deployment, and infrastructure architecture. Vague training plans draw scrutiny from USCIS during audits, so get your hiring manager to sign off on concrete technical milestones.
Target employers with active H-1B filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter AI Architect roles by employers who have filed H-1B visa LCAs, giving you a concrete signal that a company has already built the infrastructure to sponsor and transition STEM workers beyond OPT.
Use O*NET to align your job duties with STEM OPT requirements
The O*NET profile for AI Architect roles lists the core tasks and knowledge areas tied to the occupation. Referencing these in your I-983 strengthens the connection between your work authorization, your STEM degree, and the employer's training obligations.
File your extension request at least 90 days before OPT expires
USCIS requires your STEM OPT extension application to be received before your initial OPT EAD expires. Submit your I-765 and supporting documents through your DSO well in advance to avoid a gap that would disqualify you from working.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an AI Architect role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree is in an eligible STEM field such as computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or applied mathematics, and the role involves applying that technical knowledge directly. Check your degree's CIP code against the USCIS STEM designated degree list and confirm with your DSO that the AI Architect position satisfies the practical training requirement.
What does the I-983 training plan need to cover for an AI Architect position?
Your I-983 must document specific learning objectives tied to the role, not just a job description. For AI Architect positions, that means outlining how the work develops skills in areas like distributed systems design, model deployment pipelines, or cloud infrastructure architecture. Both you and your employer sign the form, and USCIS can audit it, so vague entries are a real risk.
How do I find AI Architect employers who are enrolled in E-Verify?
Browse AI Architect listings on Migrate Mate, where employers are filtered for E-Verify enrollment, so you're not wasting applications on companies that can't legally hire STEM OPT workers. You can also ask a recruiter directly for the company's E-Verify ID number and cross-reference it in the E-Verify employer search tool before accepting an offer.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if my employer loses E-Verify status after I start?
If your employer's E-Verify participation terminates after you begin working, your STEM OPT authorization is no longer valid for that employer. You'd need to find a new E-Verify-enrolled employer and file an amended I-983 with your DSO. USCIS requires continuous E-Verify enrollment throughout the extension period, not just at the time of initial hiring.
Can I apply for an H-1B while working as an AI Architect on STEM OPT?
Yes, and cap-gap protections apply if your STEM OPT EAD is still valid when H-1B lottery registration opens in March. If selected, your work authorization automatically extends through September 30 of that fiscal year while USCIS adjudicates the petition. AI Architect roles are strong candidates for H-1B specialty occupation classification given the degree requirements attached to the position.
