Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Genai Engineer
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code appears on the DHS STEM OPT designated degree program list. Computer science, electrical engineering, and data science CIP codes all qualify, but a general IT or business analytics degree may not.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
GenAI roles often appear at startups and AI labs that haven't yet enrolled in E-Verify. Before signing anything, ask the recruiter for the company's E-Verify employer ID or look it up through the E-Verify employer search tool.
Tailor your I-983 training plan to GenAI deliverables
Your I-983 must list specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree, not a generic job description. Map milestones to skills like transformer architecture, retrieval-augmented generation, or model evaluation to satisfy USCIS audit requirements.
Target employers with prior STEM OPT sponsorship history
Use Migrate Mate to filter GenAI Engineer openings by employers who have sponsored STEM OPT students before, using DOL Labor Condition Application filing data. This cuts time spent on companies unfamiliar with the E-Verify and I-983 requirements.
File your STEM OPT extension at least 90 days early
USCIS allows you to apply for the 24-month STEM extension up to 90 days before your initial OPT EAD expires. Missing this window means a gap in work authorization, which is especially costly if you're mid-project at a GenAI team.
Understand cap-gap protection if you receive an H-1B offer
If an employer files an H-1B visa petition on your behalf before April 1 and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap rules automatically extend your OPT EAD through September 30. Confirm your employer will file on time so this bridge stays intact.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a GenAI Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, GenAI Engineer positions typically qualify because they require direct application of STEM knowledge in machine learning, artificial intelligence, or computer engineering. Your eligibility also depends on your degree: the CIP code on your transcript must appear on the DHS STEM designated degree program list. Degrees in computer science, electrical engineering, and data science consistently qualify. Confirm your specific code with your DSO before applying for the extension.
What does my employer need to do for my STEM OPT authorization?
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify, sign the Form I-983 training plan with you, and report changes in employment to your DSO within five business days. For GenAI roles, the I-983 must detail specific STEM-related learning goals tied to your daily work, such as model development cycles or data pipeline engineering. USCIS can audit these plans, so vague job descriptions are a liability.
How do I find GenAI Engineer jobs where the employer is already enrolled in E-Verify?
Search on Migrate Mate, which surfaces GenAI Engineer openings filtered for employers with verified STEM OPT hiring history using DOL LCA data. You can also cross-check any employer directly through the E-Verify employer search tool before applying. Prioritizing E-Verify-enrolled companies at the application stage avoids delays after an offer is extended.
What happens to my work authorization if my STEM OPT period ends while an H-1B petition is pending?
If your employer filed an H-1B cap-subject petition before April 1 of the fiscal year and USCIS selected it in the lottery, cap-gap rules extend your OPT EAD automatically through September 30. During the cap-gap period, you can continue working in your GenAI role without interruption. If the petition is not selected, your work authorization ends when your current EAD expires, so your employer's filing timeline matters significantly.
Can I work as a contractor or on a project basis as a GenAI Engineer on STEM OPT?
STEM OPT requires a bona fide employer-employee relationship, which means your day-to-day work must be supervised and directed by the E-Verify-enrolled employer who signed your I-983. Short-term project placements through a staffing agency can satisfy this requirement only if the agency itself is the E-Verify employer and signs the I-983. Independent contracting with no direct supervision does not meet USCIS standards for STEM OPT.
