Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization in AI Solution Architect
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code maps to an eligible STEM field on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Computer science, software engineering, and information systems degrees typically qualify, but interdisciplinary or business-focused degrees sometimes don't.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask your prospective employer directly whether their company is enrolled in E-Verify before signing anything. STEM OPT is void without it, and many smaller consulting firms or AI startups haven't enrolled even when they're otherwise willing to hire on OPT.
Structure your I-983 around architecture deliverables
Your I-983 training plan must tie your day-to-day work to your STEM degree. For AI Solution Architect roles, document specific learning objectives around systems design, model deployment, and cloud infrastructure so your DSO can approve it without revision.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
Before finalizing compensation, run the OFLC Wage Search for SOC code 15-1299 or the closest AI architecture classification in your metro area. If your offered salary falls below the prevailing wage Level I, that's a signal the employer may struggle with a future H-1B visa petition.
Target employers with H-1B filing history in AI roles
Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers who have filed H-1B LCAs for AI, machine learning, or solution architect titles. Those employers already understand STEM OPT requirements and are far more likely to support your H-1B transition before your authorization window closes.
File your STEM OPT extension at least 90 days early
Submit your STEM OPT extension application to USCIS no later than 90 days before your initial OPT expires. If USCIS hasn't adjudicated by your OPT end date, your cap-gap protection only applies if you're in an active H-1B lottery cycle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an AI Solution Architect role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree is in an eligible STEM field such as computer science, software engineering, or electrical engineering, and your job duties involve applying that technical knowledge directly. The role must be tied to your degree through a signed I-983 training plan approved by your DSO. Roles that are primarily sales, account management, or client-facing without a technical engineering component may not qualify.
What STEM degrees are eligible for the STEM OPT extension for this role?
Degrees with CIP codes in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, information systems, applied mathematics, and data science are commonly approved. You can cross-reference your degree's CIP code against the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List to confirm eligibility before your application. If your degree is in a borderline field like management information systems or computational social science, confirm with your DSO early.
How do I verify that an employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
Ask the recruiter or HR contact directly whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify before you reach the offer stage. You can also verify employer enrollment through the E-Verify employer search tool maintained by DHS. For AI Solution Architect roles at large tech companies this is rarely an issue, but smaller AI consultancies and early-stage startups frequently aren't enrolled, which would make STEM OPT employment unauthorized.
What should my I-983 training plan include for an AI Solution Architect position?
Your I-983 must describe how the position's training goals relate to your STEM degree. For an AI Solution Architect, document specific technical objectives such as designing large-scale machine learning pipelines, architecting cloud-native AI systems, or implementing model governance frameworks. Vague descriptions like 'learning business skills' will be rejected by your DSO. USCIS may also audit the plan, so tie every goal to a concrete engineering or scientific competency.
Where can I find AI Solution Architect jobs where employers already understand STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by employers who have active E-Verify enrollment and a history of filing Labor Condition Applications for technical roles, so you can focus on companies already familiar with the STEM OPT process. This matters for AI Solution Architect positions because the H-1B transition timeline is tight and employers who have never filed before often can't move fast enough to meet the cap deadline.
