Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's CIP code on your I-20 maps to a recognized STEM field. Computer science, electrical engineering, and statistics all qualify, but your DSO must confirm the match before your STEM OPT application goes to USCIS.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask the recruiter for the company's E-Verify employer identification number before signing anything. Any employer not enrolled in E-Verify legally cannot employ you on a STEM OPT extension, regardless of how enthusiastic they are about hiring you.
Target AI roles at E-Verify registered companies using Migrate Mate
Search AI Engineer positions on Migrate Mate, which filters for employers already enrolled in E-Verify. This cuts the time you'd otherwise spend vetting each company individually before deciding whether to apply.
Negotiate your I-983 training plan scope early
Your I-983 must show how the AI Engineer role provides practical training in your STEM field. Bring a draft to the offer stage and ask the hiring manager to confirm the job duties align with it, revisions after you start can delay your extension.
Check prevailing wage before evaluating offers
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for AI Engineer roles under the relevant SOC code in your metro area. Your offer should meet or exceed this figure, since employers will certify wage compliance if they later sponsor your H-1B visa.
Apply 90 days before your OPT end date
USCIS requires your STEM OPT extension application to be filed while your initial OPT is still valid. Missing the 90-day filing window means losing work authorization continuity, so sync your application timeline with your DSO well in advance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an AI Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, AI Engineer positions typically qualify because they require applied knowledge in computer science, machine learning, or a related STEM discipline. Your degree's CIP code on your I-20 must correspond to a STEM-designated field as recognized by the Department of Homeland Security. Your DSO can confirm whether your specific degree and job offer meet the criteria before you apply.
How do I verify that an AI Engineer employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
Ask the employer directly for their E-Verify employer identification number or request confirmation from HR before accepting an offer. E-Verify enrollment is a federal requirement for all STEM OPT employers, not optional. You can also search the E-Verify employer search tool by company name to confirm enrollment status. If a company isn't enrolled, they can't legally employ you on a STEM OPT extension.
What goes into an I-983 training plan for an AI Engineer role?
Your I-983 must describe how the AI Engineer position provides structured practical training in your STEM field, including the specific skills you'll develop, the supervision you'll receive, and how the role relates to your degree. AI-specific duties like model development, data pipeline engineering, or MLOps implementation all support a strong training plan. Both you and your employer sign the form, and your DSO must approve it before USCIS will process your extension.
What happens to my work authorization if my H-1B is selected in the lottery during my STEM OPT period?
If your H-1B is selected and your employer files a timely change-of-status petition, cap-gap protection extends your STEM OPT work authorization through September 30 of that year, even if your EAD expires before then. You can continue working for the same employer during this period. USCIS requires your OPT to be valid at the time of the H-1B filing for cap-gap to apply.
Where can I find AI Engineer jobs that accept STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate lists AI Engineer roles at employers already enrolled in E-Verify, so you're not spending time applying to companies that can't legally hire you on a STEM OPT extension. You can filter by role type and authorization requirements to surface positions where your F-1 status is a workable fit from the start of the application process.
