Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization in Biostatistician
Confirm your CIP code covers biostatistics
Statistics (27.0502), biostatistics (26.1102), and mathematics (27.01) CIP codes qualify for STEM OPT. Check your degree's CIP code with your DSO before applying to roles, since a mismatch delays your extension request.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Your employer must be actively enrolled in E-Verify before you submit your STEM OPT extension application. Search the E-Verify employer search tool by company name or employer ID to confirm enrollment status before signing anything.
Target employers with active LCA filings in biostatistics
Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for biostatistician and statistician roles. Companies with recent LCA activity have already cleared DOL prevailing-wage requirements and understand the STEM OPT process.
Build your I-983 training plan around quantitative deliverables
USCIS requires the I-983 to list specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree. Frame each goal around measurable statistical outputs: model validation, trial analysis, or survival analysis tasks your degree prepared you to perform.
Research prevailing wage tiers using OFLC Wage Search
Biostatistician salaries vary sharply by geography and experience level. Run your specific SOC code through OFLC Wage Search before negotiating, so you know what DOL wage levels apply in your target market and can evaluate offers accurately.
Apply early if your OPT end date overlaps cap season
If your STEM OPT runs through September, your work authorization could gap without H-1B visa cap-gap coverage. File your extension application at least 90 days before your current OPT expires to keep your status continuous during the USCIS adjudication window.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a biostatistics or statistics degree qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes. Degrees in biostatistics (CIP 26.1102), statistics (CIP 27.0502), and mathematics (CIP 27.01) all qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Applied mathematics and data science degrees may also qualify depending on the CIP code your institution assigned. Confirm the exact code with your DSO before submitting the extension request to USCIS, since the CIP code on your I-20 must appear on the official STEM Designated Degree Program list.
Does a biostatistician employer need to be enrolled in E-Verify?
Yes. E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement for STEM OPT. Your employer must be enrolled before USCIS approves your extension, and they must use E-Verify to confirm your work authorization once you start. Pharmaceutical companies, contract research organizations, and academic medical centers that hire biostatisticians are generally enrolled, but verify directly using the E-Verify employer search before accepting an offer.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a biostatistician role?
The I-983 must describe how your day-to-day work as a biostatistician connects to your STEM degree. List specific tasks tied to your training: designing statistical analysis plans, implementing survival models, validating clinical trial data, or applying regression techniques. USCIS looks for concrete learning objectives that a statistics or biostatistics degree would prepare you to perform, not a generic job description. Both you and your employer sign the I-983, and your DSO must authorize it before your extension period begins.
How does cap-gap work if my STEM OPT ends during H-1B season?
If your STEM OPT expires between April 1 and September 30 and your employer filed an H-1B petition on your behalf before your OPT end date, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30. Your EAD card will show an earlier expiration, but your authorization continues under cap-gap. Carry your expired EAD, your I-797 receipt notice, and your I-20 with the cap-gap notation together as your employment authorization proof during this period.
Where can I find biostatistician employers that hire STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate filters biostatistician roles by employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and LCA filing history, so you can see which companies have already sponsored students in statistician and quantitative research roles. Pharmaceutical firms, academic medical centers, government health agencies, and clinical research organizations are common sources. Targeting employers with active DOL filings reduces the risk of accepting an offer from a company unfamiliar with the STEM OPT process.
