Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as an AI Consultant
Verify your CIP code before applying
Your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code determines STEM OPT eligibility. Ask your DSO to confirm your program is on the STEM Designated Degree Program List before you accept any offer, not after.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before the interview stage
AI consulting roles often sit inside boutique advisory firms that haven't hired international students before. Search the E-Verify employer search tool by company name before your first interview so you're not negotiating this after a verbal offer.
Frame your I-983 around specific AI deliverables
Generic training plans get kicked back by DSOs. Map each training goal to a concrete project output: model performance benchmarks, deployment pipelines, or client advisory reports. Your supervisor signs off, so brief them on what the plan actually requires.
Target firms with active H-1B filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter AI Consultant roles by employers who have filed H-1B visa LCAs, which signals they understand work authorization workflows and are less likely to rescind offers when your STEM OPT paperwork arrives.
Account for cap-gap timing in your offer negotiation
If your OPT expires before October 1 and your employer files an H-1B petition on your behalf, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization. Confirm your start date and OPT end date with USCIS timelines in mind before signing.
Benchmark your offer against OFLC Wage Search data
DOL prevailing wage levels for AI Consultant roles vary significantly by metropolitan area and job zone. Pull the Level II and Level III figures from OFLC Wage Search for your work location before evaluating whether an offer is competitive and compliant.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my STEM degree qualify me for the 24-month OPT extension in an AI Consultant role?
Your degree must appear on the STEM Designated Degree Program List maintained by the Department of Homeland Security. Degrees in computer science, data science, electrical engineering, statistics, and information systems are typically listed. Your DSO can confirm your specific CIP code. The AI Consultant job itself doesn't need to match a STEM classification; your degree program does.
What E-Verify requirement applies to my AI Consultant employer?
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify before your STEM OPT extension begins. Enrollment is separate from being a government contractor or otherwise E-Verify compliant for other reasons. Confirm active enrollment status directly through the E-Verify employer search tool before signing an offer, since disenrollment after your extension starts can jeopardize your status.
What should the I-983 training plan include for an AI Consultant position?
The I-983 must describe how the role provides practical training directly related to your STEM degree. For AI Consultant work, this means identifying specific learning objectives tied to your degree field, such as applied machine learning, data pipeline architecture, or model validation methods. Your employer's authorized signatory completes specific sections, and your DSO submits the final approved plan to SEVIS.
How does cap-gap protection work if my employer files an H-1B petition before my OPT expires?
If your OPT end date falls before October 1 and your employer files a timely H-1B cap-subject petition, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year, or until USCIS adjudicates your petition. You can continue working in your AI Consultant role during this period without interruption, provided your employer filed before your OPT expired.
Where can I find AI Consultant jobs where employers already understand STEM OPT requirements?
Migrate Mate lists AI Consultant roles filtered for employers with E-Verify enrollment and prior international hiring activity, which reduces the time you spend educating HR teams about training plan requirements and authorization timelines. Searching by role and authorization type on Migrate Mate surfaces employers who have navigated STEM OPT before and are structured to support it.
