Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Solution Engineer
Verify your degree's CIP code eligibility
Not every STEM degree automatically qualifies for the extension. Cross-reference your degree's CIP code against the official STEM Designated Degree Program List published by DHS to confirm your major qualifies before you start your job search.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify before your STEM OPT extension can be approved. Ask HR directly whether the specific hiring entity, not just the parent company, holds an active E-Verify company ID.
Target pre-sales and technical roles with engineering titles
Solution Engineer postings often blend sales and engineering responsibilities. Roles weighted toward architecture design, API integration, or technical scoping are easier to tie to a STEM degree on your I-983 training plan than roles focused primarily on quota or revenue targets.
Build your I-983 training plan around measurable learning goals
Your I-983 must connect daily job tasks to your STEM degree's learning objectives. Draft specific goals around systems integration, solution architecture, or data analysis before your start date so your DSO can approve the plan without delays.
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by E-Verify status
Searching broadly for Solution Engineer roles wastes time on employers who can't hire you. Migrate Mate filters job listings by E-Verify enrollment so you only see roles where the STEM OPT extension is actually an option from day one.

Find Solution Engineer JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Solution Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on how the role is structured and whether your degree aligns with the job duties. Solution Engineer positions that emphasize systems architecture, technical implementation, or software integration typically qualify. You'll need to document the connection between your STEM degree and your daily responsibilities on the I-983 training plan. Roles that are primarily sales-focused with only incidental technical work are harder to justify to your DSO and USCIS.
Which STEM degrees support a Solution Engineer STEM OPT extension?
Degrees in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, information systems, and applied mathematics commonly support Solution Engineer roles. Your degree's CIP code must appear on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. If your degree is in a borderline field like management information systems or industrial engineering, confirm the CIP code with your DSO before targeting roles, since not all concentrations within a field are listed.
How do I verify that a hiring employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
Ask HR whether the specific legal entity extending the offer has an active E-Verify company ID. Large companies sometimes have subsidiaries or acquired units that aren't enrolled under the parent's account. You can also ask for the E-Verify company ID number and verify enrollment status directly through the E-Verify program. Do this before you sign an offer, not after, since switching employers mid-extension requires a new I-983 and DSO approval.
What should my I-983 training plan include for a Solution Engineer position?
Your I-983 must list specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree, a description of the practical training, how your employer will supervise your work, and evaluation criteria. For Solution Engineer roles, strong learning objectives include designing technical solution architectures, applying systems integration methods, and using data analysis to scope client requirements. Generic objectives like 'improve communication skills' won't satisfy USCIS. Your employer's supervisor must co-sign the plan.
Where can I find Solution Engineer jobs open to STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate lists Solution Engineer roles filtered by E-Verify enrollment, so you can confirm work authorization eligibility before applying. Standard job boards don't surface E-Verify status, which means you can spend weeks in a process only to find the employer can't support your extension. Filtering by E-Verify status at the start saves significant time and avoids the cap-gap risk of an expiring EAD while waiting on an employer who isn't eligible.
