Verify your CIP code before applying
Pull your degree's CIP code from your school's DSO and confirm it maps to a recognized STEM field. Cognitive science, information science, and human-computer interaction all qualify, but the match must be documented on your I-20 before your DSO can recommend the STEM OPT extension.
Check E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Every UX Researcher employer must be actively enrolled in E-Verify to hire you on STEM OPT. Search the E-Verify employer search tool by company name before your offer stage to avoid discovering a disqualifying gap after you've already given notice elsewhere.
Negotiate your I-983 training plan deliverables early
UX Researcher roles require a signed I-983 outlining specific learning goals tied to your STEM degree. Draft proposed goals around research methods, usability testing, or HCI application before your first week so your supervisor signs a plan that actually reflects your day-to-day work.
Target UX teams inside E-Verify-enrolled research labs
Product research divisions at enterprise software companies and federal contractors are structurally required to maintain E-Verify enrollment. On Migrate Mate, filter for UX Researcher postings where employers are already verified for STEM OPT hiring so you skip the enrollment check entirely.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
STEM OPT doesn't set a minimum wage, but your employer must pay you the same rate as similarly situated U.S. workers. Run your specific job title and location through the OFLC Wage Search to spot any pay gap before you sign, since underpayment is a compliance red flag during USCIS audits.
Align your H-1B filing timeline with your OPT end date
If your employer files an H-1B visa petition before your STEM OPT expires and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap protection automatically extends your work authorization through September 30. Confirm your employer's HR team knows your exact OPT end date at least six months out so they can meet the April 1 filing window.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a UX Researcher role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your STEM degree aligns with the role's duties and your school assigns a qualifying CIP code to your program. Degrees in cognitive science, human-computer interaction, computer science, or information science commonly support UX Researcher positions. Your DSO confirms eligibility and recommends the extension on your I-20. USCIS makes the final determination when it approves your updated EAD.
What E-Verify requirement applies to my UX Researcher employer?
Your employer must be actively enrolled in E-Verify, not just registered at some point in the past. E-Verify enrollment must be in place before you start work, and your employer must run your Form I-9 information through the system within three business days of your hire date. If an employer is not enrolled, you cannot use STEM OPT with them regardless of the role's STEM alignment.
What should my I-983 training plan include for a UX Researcher position?
Your I-983 must connect your daily work to the STEM knowledge from your degree. For a UX Researcher, that typically means documenting learning goals around research methodology, statistical analysis of user data, experimental design, or human-factors application. Both you and a qualified supervisor must sign the form, and your DSO must receive updates every six months confirming the training plan is still being followed.
How does cap-gap protection work if my STEM OPT expires during H-1B season?
If your employer files a timely H-1B petition on your behalf before your STEM OPT EAD expires and USCIS selects you in the lottery, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that year. You can continue working as a UX Researcher during this period even without a new EAD in hand, provided your employer has a valid receipt notice from USCIS.
Where can I find UX Researcher jobs with employers already set up for STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate surfaces UX Researcher listings from employers with verified E-Verify enrollment, so you can filter specifically for companies that are already set up to hire STEM OPT students. You can also cross-reference the O*NET occupation profile for User Experience Researcher to identify the role's typical degree requirements and confirm your credentials align before applying.
