Structural Drafter Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a structural drafter in Texas?
The most direct path is completing an associate degree in drafting and design technology or civil engineering technology from a Texas community college, such as those offered through Houston Community College or Lone Star College. Texas does not require a state license specifically for structural drafters, but earning Autodesk Certified Professional credentials and building a portfolio of structural drawings strengthens candidacy significantly. Many Texas employers expect applicants to demonstrate proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit before hiring at the entry level.
How much do structural drafters make in Texas?
Structural drafters in Texas earn a median of about $63,320 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $44,950 for the lowest 10% to over $100,350 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire structural drafters in Texas?
Employers hiring structural drafters in Texas right now include Magrym Consulting and Miller Legg & Associates, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large concentration of energy, industrial, and commercial construction projects means demand from engineering and design firms tends to be sustained year-round rather than project-dependent.
Which Texas cities have the most structural drafter jobs?
San Antonio, Austin, and Fort Worth consistently post the most structural drafter openings in Texas. Houston leads because of its dense cluster of energy, petrochemical, and industrial engineering firms, while Dallas-Fort Worth drives demand through large-scale commercial construction and corporate headquarters expansions, and San Antonio's sustained infrastructure investment and military-related construction projects support a steady volume of openings as well.
Are there remote structural drafter jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely analytical roles. About 0% of structural drafter openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the fact that many projects require on-site coordination with engineers, fabricators, and inspectors. The parts of the role most suited to remote work are BIM modeling, redline incorporation, and documentation tasks that don't depend on physical site access.
How can I get hired as a structural drafter in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to engineering and construction firms that hire CAD technicians or drafting assistants as stepping-stone roles. Large Texas-based firms such as Jacobs and AECOM periodically bring on junior drafters through new-graduate hiring programs. Adjacent roles like document control technician or project coordinator at a structural engineering firm can transition into drafting responsibilities. Building a portfolio of academic or personal projects drawn in AutoCAD or Revit and earning an Autodesk certification gives applicants a concrete edge over candidates with similar education.
Where can I find and apply to structural drafter jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to structural drafter jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings from active employers. Find the roles that fit your experience and specialty and apply directly to each one.
