Structural Engineer Jobs in San Diego: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a structural engineer job in San Diego?
Focus your search on San Diego's defense contractors, civil engineering consulting firms, and the commercial construction boom around Downtown and Mission Valley. Candidates with experience in seismic design stand out here given California's earthquake requirements. Firms working on transit infrastructure, military base upgrades, and coastal development are consistently active, so targeting those project types and employer categories gives you a concrete edge in this market.
Which companies hire structural engineers in San Diego?
Employers hiring structural engineers in San Diego right now include WSP, AECOM, and Kiewit, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. San Diego's mix of defense primes, civil engineering consultancies, and large general contractors means opportunities exist across project scales and specialties.
Are there remote structural engineer jobs in San Diego?
Yes, though structural engineering is largely site-dependent, with field inspection and project coordination requiring in-person presence. About 50% of structural engineer openings tied to San Diego are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the role's hands-on nature. Analytical work such as modeling, load calculations, and design documentation is most likely to be performed remotely within San Diego-based firms.
How can I get a structural engineer job in San Diego with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in San Diego is joining a mid-size civil or structural consulting firm as an engineer-in-training or junior designer. Firms supporting Navy and Marine Corps base infrastructure projects regularly bring on recent graduates, and commercial developers active in East Village and Chula Vista often hire entry-level engineers. Proficiency in SAP2000 or ETABS and familiarity with California Building Code requirements gives candidates a practical edge over the competition.

San Diego structural engineer roles concentrate in Construction & Real Estate, Consulting & Professional Services, and Human Resources, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. The region's large defense presence, ongoing coastal and transit infrastructure investment, and active commercial real estate market all sustain consistent demand for structural expertise across those sectors.
