Structural Engineer Jobs in San Francisco: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a structural engineer job in San Francisco?
Focus your search on firms doing seismic retrofit work, transit and public infrastructure projects, and mid- to high-rise residential development, since those sectors drive most of the local demand. Engineering consultancies concentrated in SoMa and the Financial District hire steadily, and public agencies tied to BART, SFMTA, and the Port of San Francisco post regularly. Candidates with ETABS, SAP2000, and California seismic code experience stand out in this market.
Which companies hire structural engineers in San Francisco?
Employers hiring structural engineers in San Francisco right now include Stantec, KPFF Consulting Engineers, and Holmes US, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. The local market is anchored by mid-size engineering consultancies, large multidisciplinary design firms, and public infrastructure agencies, all of which hire across experience levels.
Are there remote structural engineer jobs in San Francisco?
Yes, though structural engineering is largely site- and review-dependent, so fully remote roles are less common than in purely desk-based fields. About 50% of structural engineer openings tied to San Francisco are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, skewing toward firms where design, modeling, and plan review can happen off-site. Roles focused on BIM coordination and computational analysis tend to offer the most schedule flexibility.
How can I get a structural engineer job in San Francisco with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is targeting junior engineer or EIT roles at mid-size consultancies in SoMa and the Financial District, which hire graduate-level candidates and support them through the PE licensure process. San Francisco's volume of seismic retrofit and public infrastructure work also creates openings for entry-level roles on long-duration projects. Familiarity with California seismic standards and proficiency in structural analysis software give new candidates a concrete edge over generalist applicants.
Which industries hire the most structural engineers in San Francisco?
The sectors hiring the most structural engineers in San Francisco are Consulting & Professional Services and Construction & Real Estate, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. San Francisco's seismic risk, aging building stock, and major transit expansion projects keep demand concentrated in construction, public works, and large-scale commercial development.
