Student Services Counselor Jobs in Kansas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a student services counselor in Kansas?
Most student services counselor roles in Kansas require a master's degree in counseling, higher education, or student affairs. For K-12 positions, the Kansas State Department of Education issues school counselor licenses, which require an accredited graduate program and a supervised practicum. College and university roles do not require a state license but strongly prefer a relevant master's and direct advising experience. Volunteering or interning in a Kansas campus advising office during graduate school is the most direct path into the field.
Which companies hire student services counselors in Kansas?
Kansas student services counselor roles are posted by University of Kansas, Salina Regional Health Center, and Kansas City Kansas Community College and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Kansas's large public university systems and its network of community colleges, including institutions in the Kansas City metro and the Flint Hills region, generate the most consistent openings.
Which Kansas cities have the most student services counselor jobs?
Lawrence, Kansas City, and Salina consistently have the most student services counselor openings in Kansas. Wichita leads because of its concentration of postsecondary institutions and workforce-focused community colleges, Lawrence draws demand from a large flagship university campus, and Topeka's openings reflect both state agency programs and community college presence serving the capital region.
Are there remote student services counselor jobs in Kansas?
Yes, but they're limited. Student services counseling is primarily relationship-driven work that most Kansas employers expect to be done in person, particularly for advising, crisis support, and new student orientation. About 0% of student services counselor openings tied to Kansas are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions tend to be in virtual advising programs or distance education support roles at Kansas's online-focused colleges.
How can I get hired as a student services counselor in Kansas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an assistantship or graduate student worker role within a Kansas university's advising or student affairs office while completing a master's program. Wichita State University, the University of Kansas, and Kansas State University all offer graduate assistantships that provide direct supervised experience. Candidates coming from adjacent roles like financial aid counseling, admissions, or residential life have a strong lateral path into advising. Earning a School Counselor license through the Kansas State Department of Education also opens K-12 doors for those who want broader options.
Where can I find and apply to student services counselor jobs in Kansas?
You can find and apply to student services counselor jobs in Kansas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Kansas openings across universities, community colleges, and K-12 districts. Search the available roles, find ones that match your background and preferred location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
