Surgical Dental Assistant Jobs in Indiana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a surgical dental assistant in Indiana?
Indiana does not require a state license for dental assistants, but employers consistently prefer candidates who hold a credential from the Dental Assisting National Board, particularly the Certified Dental Assistant or Certified Orthodontic Assistant designation. Most surgical roles also expect completion of an accredited dental assisting program, which is offered at institutions like Ivy Tech Community College across Indiana. Gaining hands-on surgical chair-side experience and current BLS certification rounds out the typical hiring profile.
Which companies hire surgical dental assistants in Indiana?
Indiana surgical dental assistant roles are posted by Indiana University Health, Franciscan Health, and Community Health Network and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Indiana's mix of large health system-affiliated dental clinics, regional oral surgery specialty groups, and multi-site dental service organizations keeps the hiring pool broad statewide.
Which Indiana cities have the most surgical dental assistant jobs?
Indianapolis, Mishawaka, and Carmel have the most surgical dental assistant openings in Indiana. Indianapolis anchors the market through its dense concentration of oral surgery specialty groups and health system-affiliated dental departments, while Fort Wayne and Evansville generate consistent openings through regional medical centers and established multi-location oral surgery practices serving those metropolitan areas.
Are there remote surgical dental assistant jobs in Indiana?
Yes, but they're rare. Surgical dental assisting is a hands-on chair-side role that requires physical presence for nearly all core duties, leaving limited room for remote work. About 6% of surgical dental assistant openings tied to Indiana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions typically involve administrative coordination, patient scheduling, or insurance pre-authorization rather than clinical work.
How can I get hired as a surgical dental assistant in Indiana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a CODA-accredited dental assisting program at a school like Ivy Tech Community College, then targeting externship-to-hire pipelines that large Indiana oral surgery groups and IU Health dental affiliates offer new graduates. Applying for a general dental assistant or dental sterilization technician role within a practice that includes an oral surgery department is a common lateral move that builds surgical exposure. Holding a current DANB exam registration and BLS certification gives candidates a measurable edge when competing for entry-level surgical chair-side openings.
Where can I find and apply to surgical dental assistant jobs in Indiana?
Migrate Mate lists current surgical dental assistant openings in Indiana in one place. Search the roles available, find the ones that match your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to the positions that fit your situation.
