Surgical Dental Assistant Jobs in New Jersey: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a surgical dental assistant in New Jersey?
You become a surgical dental assistant in New Jersey by first registering with the New Jersey State Board of Dentistry as a dental assistant, which requires completing a board-approved dental assisting program or demonstrating equivalent work experience, and passing a radiography certification course to legally expose X-rays. From there, gaining chair-side surgical experience through an oral surgery or periodontal practice, and holding current CPR certification, positions you for surgical assistant roles across the state.
Which companies hire surgical dental assistants in New Jersey?
Companies currently hiring surgical dental assistants in New Jersey include RWJBarnabas Health, Cooper University Healthcare, and Hackensack Meridian Health, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. New Jersey's density of oral surgery group practices and hospital-affiliated dental departments means openings appear regularly across both suburban and urban markets.
Which New Jersey cities have the most surgical dental assistant jobs?
Camden, Newark, and Livingston have the most surgical dental assistant openings in New Jersey. Newark and Edison lead because of their high concentration of multi-specialty dental groups, hospital systems, and oral surgery centers serving dense urban and suburban populations, while Cherry Hill anchors South Jersey hiring as a regional hub for private group practices.
Are there remote surgical dental assistant jobs in New Jersey?
Yes, but they're rare. Surgical dental assisting is a hands-on, chair-side role that requires physical presence for patient care and instrument handling. About 10% of surgical dental assistant openings tied to New Jersey are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions typically involve administrative or patient coordination duties rather than direct clinical work.
How can I get hired as a surgical dental assistant in New Jersey with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a New Jersey Board of Dentistry-approved dental assisting program, which pairs classroom instruction with clinical externships at participating practices. Large dental service organizations operating in New Jersey, such as Aspen Dental, often onboard recent graduates into general chair-side roles where surgical exposure develops over time. Candidates who hold their radiography certification and CPR card before applying stand out, and lateral moves from front-desk or sterilization technician positions are a recognized door into clinical work at many practices.
