Nurse Practitioner Or Physician Assistant Jobs in New Jersey: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a nurse practitioner or physician assistant in New Jersey?
You must hold a current license issued by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, which oversees both advanced practice nurses and physician assistants in the state. Nurse practitioners need a master's or doctoral degree in nursing plus national board certification through AANP or ANCC, while physician assistants must complete an accredited PA program and pass the PANCE through the NCCPA. New Jersey also requires a collaborative practice agreement with a supervising physician for prescriptive authority.
Which companies hire nurse practitioner or physician assistants in New Jersey?
Employers hiring nurse practitioner or physician assistants in New Jersey right now include Lyra Health, Carbon Health, and Hackensack Meridian Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New Jersey's density of academic medical centers and large regional health systems means openings appear consistently across both hospital-based and outpatient settings throughout the state.
Which New Jersey cities have the most nurse practitioner or physician assistant jobs?
The cities with the most nurse practitioner or physician assistant openings in New Jersey are Hackensack, Edison, and Eatontown. Newark and the surrounding Essex County area drive the highest volume thanks to major academic medical centers and flagship campuses of large health systems, while Camden and Trenton see steady demand from regional hospital networks and federally qualified health centers serving dense urban populations.
Are there remote nurse practitioner or physician assistant jobs in New Jersey?
Yes, but they are rare. Nurse practitioner and physician assistant work is inherently hands-on, and the large majority of roles require in-person patient care. About 42% of nurse practitioner or physician assistant openings tied to New Jersey are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those positions tend to concentrate in telephonic triage, utilization review, or insurance-based care management rather than direct clinical practice.
How can I get hired as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant in New Jersey with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a new-graduate or residency program offered by New Jersey health systems such as RWJBarnabas Health and Hackensack Meridian Health, which run structured transition-to-practice programs for new advanced practice providers. Candidates without post-graduate experience often move laterally from registered nurse or surgical technologist roles within the same system. Completing your New Jersey collaborative practice agreement paperwork before your first job search and having your DEA registration in process signals readiness to hiring managers.
