System Administrator Jobs in Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a system administrator job in Houston?
Houston's strongest hiring comes from energy companies, hospital networks, and financial services firms, with roles concentrated in the Energy Corridor, Downtown, and the Texas Medical Center. Candidates who stand out hold current certifications like CompTIA Security+, Microsoft Azure Administrator, or RHCSA. Familiarity with SCADA or industrial control systems is a notable edge for energy-sector roles, which are far more prevalent here than in most U.S. cities.
Which companies hire system administrators in Houston?
Houston system administrator roles are posted by Foxconn Industrial Internet - FII, Amentum, and Eli Lilly and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Houston's employer mix skews heavily toward large energy operators, major hospital systems, and regional banks, all of which maintain substantial on-site infrastructure and hire system administrators on a recurring basis.
Are there remote system administrator jobs in Houston?
Yes, though full remote is less common for system administrators given the hands-on nature of managing physical servers, networking hardware, and data center equipment. About 33% of system administrator openings tied to Houston are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with hybrid arrangements most common at software firms and corporate headquarters located Downtown and in the Galleria area.
How can I get a system administrator job in Houston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Houston is through a help desk or IT support role at one of the city's large hospital systems, energy companies, or managed service providers, which regularly hire junior talent and promote from within. Pursuing a CompTIA A+ or Network+ certification before applying makes a measurable difference. Houston Community College and San Jacinto College both offer IT programs that local employers recognize and recruit from directly.
