System Administrator Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a system administrator in Texas?
Texas has no state-issued license specific to system administration, so the path runs through vendor-neutral and vendor certifications alongside a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Most Texas employers want at minimum a CompTIA A+ or Network+ credential for entry roles, with Microsoft, Cisco, or VMware certifications carrying weight at mid and senior levels. An associate or bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field strengthens a candidacy meaningfully, though demonstrated hands-on lab experience can substitute at smaller Texas employers.
How much do system administrators make in Texas?
System administrators in Texas earn a median of about $101,240 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,650 for the lowest 10% to over $155,430 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire system administrators in Texas?
Employers hiring system administrators in Texas right now include Memorial Hermann Health System, Methodist Health System, and Methodist Healthcare System, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of defense contractors, major financial institutions, and large regional health systems means consistent, recurring demand for systems talent beyond typical tech-company cycles.
Which Texas cities have the most system administrator jobs?
Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio account for the largest share of system administrator openings in Texas. Dallas-Fort Worth leads because of its density of corporate headquarters, financial services firms, and telecom companies, while Houston's energy sector and Texas Medical Center drive sustained IT infrastructure demand, and Austin's expanding tech industry continues pulling in systems professionals at a steady pace.
Are there remote system administrator jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're less common than for purely analytical or software roles because system administration often involves hands-on work with physical servers, network hardware, and on-site infrastructure. About 9% of system administrator openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with remote arrangements most often available for cloud-focused roles or monitoring and scripting responsibilities that don't require physical presence.
How can I get hired as a system administrator in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a help desk or IT support role, which large Texas employers like Texas Health Resources, H-E-B, and the University of Texas system regularly post at the associate level with minimal experience required. Earning CompTIA A+ before applying gives an immediate edge. From a help desk position, candidates can move laterally into junior sysadmin duties within one to two years by volunteering for server and network tasks and pursuing Network+ or Microsoft certifications while employed.
Where can I find and apply to system administrator jobs in Texas?
