Systems Development Engineer Jobs in Kentucky: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a systems development engineer in Kentucky?
Systems development engineering in Kentucky has no state-issued license or registration requirement, so the path runs through education and demonstrated technical experience. Most Kentucky employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, systems engineering, or a closely related field, though candidates who have built strong portfolios through bootcamps or open-source contributions do get hired. Earning cloud certifications recognized by Kentucky's dominant employers in healthcare tech and financial services strengthens any application considerably.
How much do systems development engineers make in Kentucky?
Systems development engineers in Kentucky earn a median of about $109,010 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $76,310 for the lowest 10% to over $168,110 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire systems development engineers in Kentucky?
Employers hiring systems development engineers in Kentucky right now include Jabil, University of Louisville, and Waystar, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Kentucky's mix of large healthcare technology firms, insurance carriers, and advanced manufacturing companies means openings appear consistently across multiple industry verticals rather than being concentrated in a single sector.
Which Kentucky cities have the most systems development engineer jobs?
The cities with the most systems development engineer openings in Kentucky are Louisville, Lexington, and Florence. Louisville leads because of its large healthcare technology and logistics corporate base, Lexington adds university research and regional tech firm demand, and northern Kentucky benefits from its position in the broader Cincinnati metro where financial services and enterprise software employers regularly post Kentucky-based roles.
Are there remote systems development engineer jobs in Kentucky?
Yes, and more than most fields, because systems development engineering is fundamentally desk-based infrastructure and software work that translates well to remote environments. About 79% of systems development engineer openings tied to Kentucky are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how broadly the role has shifted away from on-site requirements. Cloud operations, automation scripting, and distributed systems work are the sub-areas most commonly offered fully remote.
How can I get hired as a systems development engineer in Kentucky with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a related infrastructure or software support role, such as systems administrator, DevOps associate, or junior platform engineer, which large Kentucky employers like Humana and Lexmark use as feeder positions into their engineering organizations. Building a public portfolio of automation scripts or infrastructure-as-code projects and earning a foundational cloud certification gives candidates without formal experience a concrete edge when applying to Kentucky's healthcare technology and financial services firms.
Where can I find and apply to systems development engineer jobs in Kentucky?
You can find and apply to systems development engineer jobs in Kentucky on Migrate Mate, which lists current Kentucky openings across Louisville, Lexington, and the northern Kentucky corridor. Find the roles that fit your experience and apply directly to each one.
