Systems Development Engineer Jobs in West Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a systems development engineer in West Virginia?
A bachelor's degree in computer science, systems engineering, or software engineering is the standard starting point for systems development engineer roles in West Virginia. The role carries no state-issued license or board registration. Most West Virginia employers, particularly federal contractors in the Charleston and Morgantown corridors, require demonstrated experience with systems integration and automated deployment. Candidates who pursue cloud certifications or vendor credentials strengthen their candidacy for competitive openings.
How much do systems development engineers make in West Virginia?
Systems development engineers in West Virginia earn a median of about $121,000 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $60,480 for the lowest 10% to over $168,620 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.

Federal contractors and defense-adjacent technology firms represent a large share of consistent systems development engineer demand across the state.
Which West Virginia cities have the most systems development engineer jobs?
Huntington, Morgantown, and West Virginia account for the most systems development engineer openings in West Virginia. Charleston draws activity from state government technology contracts and federal agency work, while Morgantown benefits from West Virginia University's research partnerships and a growing technology services cluster that attracts engineering talent and employer investment alike.
Are there remote systems development engineer jobs in West Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 38% of systems development engineer openings tied to West Virginia are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves software tooling, pipeline management, and system configuration that translates naturally to distributed environments. Roles with classified or sensitive infrastructure components are more likely to require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a systems development engineer in West Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an associate or junior systems engineer role at a federal contractor or technology services firm operating in the Charleston or Morgantown areas. West Virginia University and Marshall University both place graduates into entry-level engineering positions with employers that run structured onboarding programs. Moving laterally from QA engineering, IT operations, or systems administration is a common bridge, and candidates who hold a cloud certification or a relevant vendor credential move through screening faster at West Virginia-based contractor firms.
