Software Quality Engineer Jobs in West Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software quality engineer in West Virginia?
West Virginia does not require a state-issued license to work as a software quality engineer, so the path centers on education and certification. Most employers in Charleston, Huntington, and Morgantown expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Earning an ISTQB Foundation certification strengthens your candidacy considerably. Candidates targeting defense or government contractors may also need to meet federal security clearance requirements as part of the hiring process.
How much do software quality engineers make in West Virginia?
Software quality engineers in West Virginia earn a median of about $62,300 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $37,050 for the lowest 10% to over $127,210 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software quality engineers in West Virginia?
Employers hiring software quality engineers in West Virginia right now include WVU Medicine, Form Energy, and Owens & Minor, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Defense contractors and healthcare technology firms account for a significant share of West Virginia's ongoing QA hiring activity.
Which West Virginia cities have the most software quality engineer jobs?
Morgantown, Weirton, and Huntington lead West Virginia in software quality engineer openings. Charleston anchors the market as the state capital and home to major defense contractors and government technology agencies, while Morgantown's openings are driven largely by West Virginia University and its affiliated health and research operations, and Huntington benefits from healthcare system demand and regional technology employers.
Are there remote software quality engineer jobs in West Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields. Software quality engineering is largely desk-based work involving code review, automated test execution, and documentation, which translates well to remote environments. About 33% of software quality engineer openings tied to West Virginia are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the role's digital nature. Test automation, QA analysis, and code review duties are the functions most commonly offered on a fully remote basis.
How can I get hired as a software quality engineer in West Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for junior QA analyst or software tester roles, which West Virginia employers in Morgantown and Charleston regularly post for candidates who lack full professional experience. West Virginia University's computer science program and Mountwest Community and Technical College both produce graduates who move into associate QA positions with local defense and healthcare technology firms. Building a portfolio of automated test scripts using open-source tools and earning an ISTQB Foundation certificate gives candidates a measurable edge over other applicants without experience.
Where can I find and apply to software quality engineer jobs in West Virginia?
