Software Quality Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software quality engineer in New York?
Software quality engineering has no state-issued license in New York, so the path runs through education and demonstrated technical skill. Most employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field, though candidates who build a strong portfolio of automated test projects can enter from adjacent roles. Certifications such as ISTQB Foundation Level are recognized by New York hiring managers and can strengthen an application, particularly for candidates transitioning from manual QA or development.
How much do software quality engineers make in New York?
Software quality engineers in New York earn a median of about $121,240 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $58,180 for the lowest 10% to over $182,910 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software quality engineers in New York?
Employers hiring software quality engineers in New York right now include Google, Anthropic, and Amazon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New York's concentration of financial institutions, health systems, and enterprise technology firms means quality engineering roles appear across a wide range of industries rather than clustering in a single sector.
Which New York cities have the most software quality engineer jobs?
New York have the most software quality engineer openings in New York. New York City dominates because it houses the headquarters and major technology offices of financial services firms, media companies, and health-tech organizations that all run large software quality functions, while Albany and Buffalo contribute openings tied to state government technology contracts and regional financial or insurance employers.

Yes, and more than most fields. About 50% of software quality engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how well the role translates to distributed work. How can I get hired as a software quality engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a junior or associate QA analyst role, which large New York employers in financial services and healthcare technology regularly post for candidates without extensive experience. Building a GitHub portfolio with automated test scripts demonstrates practical skill in lieu of professional history. Lateral moves from roles such as business analyst, technical support specialist, or software developer in test are common, and earning an ISTQB Foundation Level certification gives New York hiring managers a concrete signal of baseline competency.
