Tanker Driver Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tanker driver in Texas?
To become a tanker driver in Texas, you must first earn a Class A Commercial Driver's License through the Texas Department of Public Safety, which requires passing written knowledge tests and an on-road skills exam. From there, adding the tanker (N) and hazardous materials (H) endorsements opens the majority of hauling roles in the state. Most Texas carriers expect applicants to complete or already hold these credentials before their first route.
How much do tanker drivers make in Texas?
Tanker drivers in Texas earn a median of about $56,290 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $38,150 for the lowest 10% to over $79,400 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tanker drivers in Texas?
Employers hiring tanker drivers in Texas right now include Republic Services, Dupre Logistics, and Ergon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of refineries, petrochemical plants, and agricultural processing facilities means these employers maintain consistent fleets and hire throughout the year rather than only in seasonal bursts.
Which Texas cities have the most tanker driver jobs?
Houston, Amarillo, and Baytown are the Texas cities with the most tanker driver openings. Houston's role as a global energy and petrochemical hub drives the largest share of postings, while Corpus Christi's refinery corridor and Midland-Odessa's Permian Basin oil production keep demand steady in those markets.
Are there remote tanker driver jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Tanker driving is an inherently on-the-road, hands-on role, so fully remote positions are not a realistic expectation in this field. About 0% of tanker driver openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those postings generally cover dispatch coordination, fleet management, or safety compliance functions rather than driving routes.
How can I get hired as a tanker driver in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a CDL training program at a Texas community college or a carrier-sponsored school, then applying directly to large Texas fleets that run paid apprenticeship or driver trainee programs, such as those operated by major petroleum carriers headquartered in Houston. Starting in a straight-truck or dry-van role with a Texas regional carrier and transitioning once you have logged miles is also common. Adding the tanker endorsement early, even before your first job, gives your application a clear edge over other entry-level candidates.
Where can I find and apply to tanker driver jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to tanker driver jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings updated regularly. Find the roles that fit your CDL class, endorsements, and hauling experience, then apply directly to those employers without any extra steps in between.
