Tax Accountant Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a tax accountant job in Chicago?
Target the Loop and River North, where Chicago's largest accounting firms, financial institutions, and Fortune 500 corporate tax departments concentrate their hiring. Candidates with CPA licensure, experience in federal and Illinois state compliance, and familiarity with multi-entity or multistate returns stand out. Networking through the Illinois CPA Society's Chicago chapter and attending local recruiting events also gives you a direct line to firms actively hiring.
Which companies hire tax accountants in Chicago?
Employers hiring tax accountants in Chicago right now include EY, BDO, and RSM, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Chicago's mix of Big Four and mid-market public accounting firms, major financial services companies, and large corporate headquarters creates steady, diverse hiring across both public practice and in-house tax roles.
Are there remote tax accountant jobs in Chicago?
Yes, and tax accountant work is relatively well-suited to remote arrangements given its desk-based and analytical nature. About 89% of tax accountant openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting broader flexibility at Chicago-area firms and corporate tax departments. Compliance, research, and return preparation roles tend to offer the most remote flexibility in the Chicago market.
How can I get a tax accountant job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Chicago is landing a staff tax or tax associate role at a mid-market or regional accounting firm in the Loop, where firms routinely hire recent graduates and career changers for busy-season support. Pursuing your CPA exam while working, targeting Chicago companies with formal rotational programs, and building experience through contract or seasonal tax prep roles at local firms all help open the door to full-time positions.
Which industries hire the most tax accountants in Chicago?
Most tax accountant openings in Chicago sit in Energy, Law & Legal Services, and Banking & Financial Services, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Chicago's role as a Midwest financial hub and home to numerous corporate headquarters drives sustained demand for tax professionals across both public accounting practices and large in-house tax departments.
