Tax Accountant Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax accountant in Illinois?
To practice as a licensed tax accountant in Illinois, most employers require a Certified Public Accountant license issued through the Illinois Board of Examiners, which requires completing the Uniform CPA Exam and meeting Illinois education and experience requirements. A bachelor's degree in accounting with at least the minimum credit hours in accounting and business courses is the standard starting point, and most Illinois firms also expect one to two years of supervised experience before licensure.
How much do tax accountants make in Illinois?
Tax accountants in Illinois earn a median of about $54,480 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $33,030 for the lowest 10% to over $76,150 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax accountants in Illinois?
Employers hiring tax accountants in Illinois right now include EY, BDO, and RSM, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters and large professional services firms in the Chicago metro creates steady, year-round demand across both public accounting and corporate in-house tax teams.
Which Illinois cities have the most tax accountant jobs?
Chicago, Naperville, and Elgin lead Illinois for tax accountant openings. Chicago accounts for the bulk of positions given its density of corporate headquarters, Big Four and regional accounting firms, and financial institutions, while suburban hubs like Naperville and Schaumburg attract openings from large employers and multinationals that maintain significant Midwest operations outside the city center.
Are there remote tax accountant jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 88% of tax accountant openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how well-suited the role is for desk-based, analytical work. Tax compliance, return preparation, and research functions are the most commonly offered remote, while roles requiring direct client meetings or access to on-site financial systems are more likely to require at least a hybrid schedule.
How can I get hired as a tax accountant in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a staff accountant or tax associate role at a regional or local Illinois accounting firm, where entry-level candidates are hired directly out of university programs and trained on compliance work under a licensed CPA. Large Chicago firms and national practices with Illinois offices regularly recruit through campus pipelines at the University of Illinois and DePaul University. Candidates who have passed one or more CPA exam sections stand out significantly, and adjacent roles in bookkeeping or accounts payable at Illinois companies are a common lateral move into tax work.
Where can I find and apply to tax accountant jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to tax accountant jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current Illinois openings updated regularly. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
