Tax Accountant Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax accountant in California?
To work as a tax accountant in California, you typically need a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field and a CPA license issued by the California Board of Accountancy. Licensure requires completing the required academic units, passing all four sections of the Uniform CPA Exam, and accumulating the supervised experience hours California mandates. Some employers also hire candidates who are actively working toward CPA licensure, particularly for staff-level roles.
How much do tax accountants make in California?
Tax accountants in California earn a median of about $70,030 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $38,910 for the lowest 10% to over $104,000 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax accountants in California?
Employers hiring tax accountants in California right now include KPMG, SingerLewak LLP, and CohnReznick, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's density of large corporations, entertainment studios, and technology firms means both national accounting firms and in-house corporate tax departments post openings regularly throughout the year.
Which California cities have the most tax accountant jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Jose have the most tax accountant openings in California. Los Angeles leads because of its concentration of entertainment companies, real estate investment firms, and large corporate headquarters, while San Francisco and San Jose reflect Silicon Valley's deep pool of technology and venture-backed companies that require sophisticated tax compliance and planning.
Are there remote tax accountant jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 24% of tax accountant openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which reflects how well the analytical and compliance-focused nature of tax work translates to a distributed setting. Roles centered on individual returns, corporate compliance review, and tax research tend to be the most remote-compatible, while positions requiring regular client meetings or close coordination with executive teams are more likely to be on-site.
How can I get hired as a tax accountant in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is joining a public accounting firm at the staff accountant level while pursuing CPA licensure through the California Board of Accountancy. Large California-based firms and the Big Four offices in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Sacramento run structured new-graduate programs that pair you with senior tax professionals during busy season. Candidates who have completed an accounting internship, earned their bachelor's in accounting, or passed one or more CPA exam sections gain a clear edge over those without any credentials in progress.
Where can I find and apply to tax accountant jobs in California?
