Insurance Agent Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an insurance agent in California?
You must obtain a license from the California Department of Insurance before selling or soliciting insurance in the state. The process requires completing pre-licensing education through an approved provider, passing the California insurance licensing exam for your chosen line of authority such as Property and Casualty or Life and Health, and submitting a license application. No college degree is required by the state, though many employers prefer one.
Which companies hire insurance agents in California?
Employers hiring insurance agents in California right now include Farmers Insurance, Aflac, and Aaa Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large and varied economy means openings are posted across independent agencies, captive carrier offices, and regional brokerages serving both personal and commercial clients throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most insurance agent jobs?
Los Angeles, Pasadena, and Redding account for the most insurance agent openings in California, reflecting where the state's largest concentrations of businesses, residents, and commercial real estate are located. Los Angeles and its surrounding metro anchor the list given its scale, while San Francisco's financial and tech sectors drive strong demand for commercial and employee-benefits specialists, and San Diego's military and biotech base supports consistent personal and group-lines hiring.
Are there remote insurance agent jobs in California?
Yes, and they're more common than in many other fields. About 13% of insurance agent openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the role, quoting, client communication, and policy servicing, can be handled by phone and software. Fully remote opportunities are most prevalent in inside-sales, renewals, and customer-service producer roles rather than field-based account management positions.
How can I get hired as an insurance agent in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is obtaining your California Department of Insurance license and targeting captive-carrier training programs. Farmers Insurance, State Farm, and Allstate all run structured new-agent development programs in California that provide product training and a client base to start from. Adjacent roles such as customer service representative, claims processor, or loan officer are common lateral moves. A passing score on your licensing exam before you apply is the credential that separates you from other entry-level candidates.
Where can I find and apply to insurance agent jobs in California?
You can find and apply to insurance agent jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across carriers, brokerages, and independent agencies. Search the listings, find roles that match your license type and experience level, and apply directly to each employer without creating a profile or signing up.
