Life Insurance Agent Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a life insurance agent in California?
To become a life insurance agent in California, you must obtain a license from the California Department of Insurance. The process requires completing a state-approved pre-licensing education course, passing the California Life Insurance licensing exam, submitting a license application, and clearing a background check. Most employers expect you to hold at least a life-only license before your start date, and some require the combined life and disability credential.
Which companies hire life insurance agents in California?
California life insurance agent roles are posted by State Farm, AAA Auto Club Enterprises, and Integrity Marketing and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. California's large population and concentration of high-income households make it a priority market for major national carriers and independent agencies alike.
Which California cities have the most life insurance agent jobs?
Corona, San Diego, and Costa Mesa have the most life insurance agent openings in California. Los Angeles drives volume through its sheer population and concentration of entertainment-industry and small-business clients, San Francisco's wealth management and tech-sector workforce supports demand for group and executive benefits, and San Diego's military and biotech communities sustain a steady pipeline of individual and employer-sponsored life coverage needs.
Are there remote life insurance agent jobs in California?
Yes, but they're limited, since life insurance sales often depends on building trust through in-person or video meetings with clients. About 74% of life insurance agent openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting that some carriers allow phone and video-based selling. The roles most likely to be fully remote are telesales positions focused on inbound leads or renewals rather than field prospecting.
How can I get hired as a life insurance agent in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is joining a career agency or captive carrier that provides paid training, such as the associate producer programs run by large California-based operations at New York Life, Northwestern Mutual, and Pacific Life. These programs hire candidates without a book of business and train them toward licensing and their first sales. Coming in from adjacent roles like customer service representative, financial services associate, or benefits administrator also opens doors, and holding an active California Department of Insurance license before applying gives any entry-level candidate a clear edge.
Where can I find and apply to life insurance agent jobs in California?
You can find and apply to life insurance agent jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings from carriers, independent agencies, and brokerages across the state. Search the listings, find the roles that match your license level and preferred market, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
