Bookkeeper Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a bookkeeper in California?
California does not require a state-issued license to work as a bookkeeper, so entry typically starts with an associate degree in accounting from a California community college such as Santa Monica College or De Anza College, combined with hands-on experience in accounts payable or payroll. Earning the Certified Bookkeeper designation from the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers or the QuickBooks ProAdvisor certification strengthens candidacy significantly with California employers across industries.
Which companies hire bookkeepers in California?
Employers hiring bookkeepers in California right now include CBIZ, Meta, and Intuit, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. California's mix of large entertainment studios, tech firms, agricultural businesses, and healthcare systems means bookkeeper demand stays broad and consistent throughout the year.
Which California cities have the most bookkeeper jobs?
The cities with the most bookkeeper openings in California are San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Los Angeles dominates due to its density of entertainment, real estate, and professional services firms, while San Francisco draws demand from technology and finance companies, and San Diego's healthcare and defense contractor sectors sustain consistent hiring for bookkeeping professionals.
Are there remote bookkeeper jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. Bookkeeping is desk-based and document-driven, making it well suited to remote work. About 55% of bookkeeper openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how widely California employers have adopted flexible arrangements for accounting support roles. Full-charge bookkeeping and payroll processing are the sub-areas most commonly offered remotely.
How can I get hired as a bookkeeper in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an accounts payable or accounts receivable clerk role, which California employers routinely use as a pipeline into full bookkeeping positions. Large California employers including the UC system and major county health departments post entry-level accounting support roles that do not require prior bookkeeping experience. Completing a QuickBooks Online certification and a payroll fundamentals course at a California community college gives candidates a concrete edge over other applicants without experience.
Where can I find and apply to bookkeeper jobs in California?
You can find and apply to bookkeeper jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated regularly. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level and specialty, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
