Bookkeeper Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a bookkeeper in Texas?
Texas does not require a state-issued license to work as a bookkeeper, so the path begins with a relevant education and recognized credentials. Most employers expect at least an associate degree in accounting or a related field. From there, earning the Certified Bookkeeper designation through the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers adds credibility. Gaining experience with Texas-specific requirements such as state sales tax compliance and payroll reporting makes candidates more competitive in the local market.
Which companies hire bookkeepers in Texas?
Employers hiring bookkeepers in Texas right now include Goldman Sachs, KPMG, and WEAVER, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's mix of energy, construction, healthcare, and retail sectors means demand is spread across a wide range of industries rather than concentrated in a single field.
Which Texas cities have the most bookkeeper jobs?
Dallas, Houston, and Austin have the most bookkeeper openings in Texas. Houston's volume is driven by its concentration of energy companies, engineering firms, and large healthcare systems, while Dallas benefits from a dense cluster of corporate headquarters and financial services firms, and Austin's rapid tech and professional services growth has created consistent demand for bookkeeping across smaller and mid-size businesses.
Are there remote bookkeeper jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 19% of bookkeeper openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how well the role's core tasks translate to off-site work. Accounts payable, payroll processing, and monthly close work are the functions most frequently offered remotely, particularly at professional services firms and tech companies with distributed teams.
How can I get hired as a bookkeeper in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing an accounts payable clerk or accounting assistant role at a mid-size Texas company and building toward a full bookkeeper title from within. Large Texas employers such as H-E-B, hospital systems like HCA Houston Healthcare, and regional construction firms regularly hire entry-level accounting support staff without prior bookkeeping experience. Completing a QuickBooks certification and an accredited associate degree in accounting from a Texas community college, such as Houston Community College or Austin Community College, gives candidates a concrete edge over applicants with no credentials.
Where can I find and apply to bookkeeper jobs in Texas?
