Financial Planning Analyst Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a financial planning analyst in California?
A bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or economics is the standard entry point for financial planning analyst roles in California. No state-issued license is required, but employers across California's technology, healthcare, and financial services sectors strongly favor candidates who hold or are pursuing credentials like the Chartered Financial Analyst designation or the Certified Corporate FP&A Professional certificate offered by the Association for Financial Professionals. Building proficiency in enterprise planning tools used widely by California employers gives candidates a concrete edge.
How much do financial planning analysts make in California?
Financial planning analysts in California earn a median of about $109,110 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $72,840 for the lowest 10% to over $198,280 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire financial planning analysts in California?
Employers hiring financial planning analysts in California right now include Abbott, Experian, and Roblox, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, large health systems, and major technology companies means demand for FP&A talent is distributed across multiple industries rather than a single sector.
Which California cities have the most financial planning analyst jobs?
Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Costa Mesa have the most financial planning analyst openings in California. San Francisco and San Jose drive volume through their dense concentration of technology headquarters and venture-backed companies with active FP&A teams, while Los Angeles reflects demand from the entertainment, healthcare, and consumer goods industries headquartered there.
Are there remote financial planning analyst jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 56% of financial planning analyst openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how well the core work of financial modeling, forecasting, and reporting translates to distributed teams. The most remote-friendly parts of the role tend to be recurring reporting cycles and model-building work rather than leadership presentations tied to in-person planning cycles.
How can I get hired as a financial planning analyst in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a financial analyst associate or junior FP&A role, which large California employers including technology companies, health systems like Sutter Health, and insurance carriers like Pacific Life post specifically for candidates with limited experience. Rotational finance programs at California-headquartered firms offer structured exposure across FP&A, accounting, and treasury. Moving laterally from staff accountant, budget coordinator, or financial reporting analyst roles is also common. Earning the FP&A certificate from the Association for Financial Professionals before applying signals readiness to California employers who screen for it.
